#42007 01/07/2003 2:07 AM | Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 6 Member | Member Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 6 | i'm new here folks but i need some help. my boss has a 65' C-60 line truck out behind the shop with a v-8 sitting in it. i can't figure out what size it may be. i found only one tag on the inside cowl of the truck. info as follows: 19500 gvw,trans (looks like) c4, rear axle- c15642, ratio- 8-72, trim -std, paint-30101. now these two numbers are: 157 and 84. all of this inf is stamped on a metal plate with 5 different motor and HP listings. my dad said its probably a 292ci, but isn't that a six cylinder? its definitley not a 409 (BB). according to the tag i found , that leaves it to be a 327 (i hope it is) or one of two 348's. i was told that the later was also a big block. can ya'll help me out? by the way, this is an old line truck that is complete far as i can tell and that it ran when it was parked during the mid 80's. thanks in advance. roy | | |

Since you seem to feel that it is not a 409, then probably isn't 348 either. That leaves 283 or 327 unless someone swapped the motor. There should be an engine ID on the front of the motor under the passenger side head. See if you can find, might have to clean a bit.

#42013 01/07/2003 10:44 PM | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 130 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 130 | hello royleeair. if you can, jump up and look straight down between the fire wall and the engine. on the drivers side and on top of the bell housing flange there will be a number cast into the iron[seven or eight numbers]. you will probably have to clean this area to see the number.it is a block casting number and will further identify the engine. then either tell us the number on this forum and those of us that have a list handy can tell you what it is, or you can look it up yourself as was mentioned earlier on the mortec list. good luck.

The 66 is 222 hp and the 69 is 235 hp. Here is a link to read the codes at the end of the stamped number. My engine ID says it is a 69 or earlier V8. darn engine IDs, VIN numbers are a pain you can go to 2 sites and get a 1/2 dz different answerts. I thought my casting number CD was so great, not.

#42018 01/08/2003 10:40 PM | Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 6 Member | Member Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 6 | ok folks, got a bit of news today from the boss's dad (he actually purchased the truck in 78'). he was told the motor had been swapped. i got email back from MORTEC and they say its a 65' 327ci/185hp w/2bbl. basically original. i did some crawling during lunch and got this engine casting #3782870. ( first digit may be an 8, not sure) and this number came of the passenger side head under the valve cover, #3884520 and in the center of the head is GM 23. i'm gonna keep lookingto see what i have here. i could use all of your inputs and thanks again. roy | | |
