I'm looking for advice as I get started on a new project with an old family pu. I'm trying to stay as orginal as possible with a 48 chevy pu. I have to replace the old 216 because someone melted the babbit bearings. So is it better to stay orginal with a rebuilt 216 or move up to a 235? Also should I go to a 12 volt system when we make a change?

I don't have any experience with the AD trucks. On my trucks, if I can upgrade and still return to original, that's the plan. If your going to show it as original, different ball game, otherwise save the old parts. My 2ยข

If you want to stay original there is nothing wrong with your 6 volt system. Just remember this- Good clean grounds and connections.

What it comes down to is up to you, and what the family thinks. My grandpa wants our '55 chevy that I have to be restored completely stock, he was releaved when I decided not to put a V8 in it. I dont see anything wrong with the 216, though I dont know anything about these old motors.

Rebuild parts are still available for the old 216's, including some reliability upgrades such as an insert-bearing conversion to replace the babbited rods. I'm doing a tech Tip series on repairing and adjusting the 6V charging system. Big battery cables and clean, tight connections will keep the original electrical system working OK, so if you're willing to do a little preventive maintenance, keep it stock.
