I'm updating all of my mechanicals, including Fatman's IFS.

I am leaving the non-essential bodywork and paint for later, and even long term I think I will stick with the "old truck" look.

So I like the "old truck" look of the original column and steering wheel. Anyone re-use these with rack and pinion? I would guess I would have to cut it off the old steering box with my Jet bandsaw and weld on a universal fitting to go to the new rack?

Just thinking at this point.

I plan on the "old truck" look as well however I will use a Ididit tilt for an easier mount to my Heidts front end and power steer.
I will choose a steering wheel that looks like the original.

I called Ididit a few years ago about an adaptor to make the original steering wheel fit their column, and they said if I sent them the steering wheel they could make an adaptor.

I talked to Fatman today. They said you can cut the original, then cut the outer column exposing a few inches of the steering shaft proper, put in a bearing, then weld on a U-joint on the end of the steering shaft. Only have about 4 inches of it sticking out of the firewall, then go modern down to the rack and pinion.

Sounds like how I may go. I can always switch to Ididit or Flaming River columns if I don't like it.

I got a similar kit from Buffalo Ent. for my 47 Chevy coupe, looks stock with original wheel and 3 on the tree. Uses a rag joint and some other pieces from later model vehicle. He shortened the tube and the shift rod etc. Call Bullalo and see what he can do, 360 652-7684.

I saw one just like you described at a cruise last evening. He shortened the stock column several inches (just stuck through the firewall) welded on a u-joint and had it going to his PS box. He slid the column down some, (steering wheel much closer to the dash). Looked good.

That is exactly what I did with my Pacer front end because I wanted the original steering wheel and column. Worked out well.

I found quite a nice Old school style column at http://www.limeworkspeedshop.com/ They do some cool column drops as well. If you decide not to use the original, you could give them a shout!
