I talked to Fatman today. They said you can cut the original, then cut the outer column exposing a few inches of the steering shaft proper, put in a bearing, then weld on a U-joint on the end of the steering shaft. Only have about 4 inches of it sticking out of the firewall, then go modern down to the rack and pinion.

Sounds like how I may go. I can always switch to Ididit or Flaming River columns if I don't like it.
