I'm considering putting a 4.75 ring and pinion in my 1940 1 1/2 ton.

I don't know of an installation kit for the replacement. Is it possible to swap only the ring and pinion without replacing bearing, shims, etc?

What issues will I run into if I go down this road?

Is that a torque tube setup, or did that go out in 1939?

If it is you may as well replace the bearings while your in there. Youll need to remove the bearing from the pinion anyways and youll still need to go through the steps of checking your backlash and tooth contact. So swapping the ring and pinion still requires that you get into the shims. Im sure you can come up with the bearings and your shims may be reusable if they arent gouged or nicked. Otherwise Id think you could get shim stock and make them or have them made.

I just rebuilt the rear end for my COE and I went through 3 rear ends and some NOS parts due to damage or wear in all 3 differentials. Its just some good insurance to have new bearings with new gears.

Good luck with what you decide.

Jeff
