Does anyone know of a GMC VIN decoder? I've done a search in the archives, the tech tips, and Google, but can't find one. There's plenty of Chevrolet decoders, but no GMC. The VIN actually reads and looks like a Chevy VIN, but it has a T at the beginning. Does this "T" mean GMC and that's the only difference? My full VIN is TKE242S522648, which means 72 4x4 V8 Auto built in St. Louis. Only the "T" is unclear. Thanks for the help.

That doesn't look like a GMC serial number. What year is the truck? Where did you get the number?

and is it a V8 4x4 [KE]? why do you think it's a GMC not a Chev? someone swapped sheet metal?

It's titled as a 1972 GMC K20. It has a Chevrolet front clip. The vin number I listed is on the glove box sticker that list the options, and the VIN listed is on the metal plate riveted to the drivers side door jamb. You say it doesn't look like a GMC VIN. What is an example of a 1970's era GMC VIN? I agree it looks like a Chevy VIN except for the "T" at the beginning. I can't figure out what the "T" means. I just assumed it is a GMC thing. actually I think by the 70's Chevy and GMC vins looked quite the same, heading to the standardized modern 18[?] digit VIN .... no ideas on the 'T', and I don't know of any site that'd have any info for the 67-72's, most GMC sites are pre-55, but Jolly might know

The oldGMCtrucks.com trucks might help but there is not much information for 1960+ GMC trucks.

Technically, only 1972 from this list applies to the Stovebolt Page but this info is too
good to not mention again.

Okay Randy, good find. I've added it to the Tech Tip page and I have written to GM to see if they have something similar for earlier years. Will be interesting to see if we hear back.
