My engine shop is having trouble finding an acceptable 250 to rebuild. Truck is a 68 c-10. If I upgrade to a 292, does the exhaust and intake manifold stay the same (like F**d's 289/302)? Also do the motor mounts line up? Sorry to bug you guys but I'm kinda new to the six-bangers.

Aftermarket manifolds and headers are usually listed as fitting all four sizes. Engine mounts for the 292 are the same on the driver's side, but the passenger side engine mount is moved forward to the location of the smaller engines' fuel pump. If you can't find a good 250, how are you going to find a 292? From what I've seen, the 250 is a lot more plentiful. It doesn't have to be from a truck, the car 250 is the same block. Check out Leo Santucci's "Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual" and the Inliners site for more info.

I could go out and find a railcar load around here. You won't go wrong with the 292, though. And you can still buy a 292 in a crate if you want stock. Usually cheaper than a local rebuild.

I can't believe they put different crossmembers in to fit 250/292/327/350's. There has to be some way they adapted, doesn't there?? Joe

They are definitely the same for 194/230/250. Good thing, or I would never have found a replacement (from a 250) for the one that broke into two pieces this weekend (on my 194).

The 292 has the fuel pump in the middle of the right side of the block(the easiest way to spot a 292). The right motor mount and the fuel pump swap positions between a 250 and a 292. The 292 right motor mount just gets moved forward on the frame. Just means drilling some new holes for the bolts. On later trucks where the 292 was an option the holes are usually already there.

Look back a bit from the current mount and you'll probably see a couple of holes already in the frame, just right spacing for a motor mount int he right spot for a 292.
