Zacca [ our Australian bubba with a 1942 Chevy 3/4-ton ] sent us this cool picture and wondered if anyone might know any of the background:

A feller over here gave me this poster of a painting of a 3/4-ton and a 6x6 Chevy punching through to Alaska in 1942. 'Swundering' if anyone knows anything about it, sounds like a good story here.

We agree. Anybody got a clue?

Well…..We do know that the Japanese did invade Alaska and held at least one of the islands in the Aleutian chain for a while. I think the “highway” was built to defend that frontier during the war. (WWII)

The war in the Aleutions is also an interesting topic. The Japanese held Attu and Kiska. We invaded Attu over the beach, 7th Inf. Div and 4th Inf. Regiment. Winter combat in May of 1943, included hand to hand, bayonets and human wave suicide attacks. Just like the fighting in the South Pacific. The weather was as bad an enemy as the Japanese. We also invaded Kiska, but it had been evacuated under the cover of weather. The AL Can was to be a Main Supply Route for that front should it have happened.

Hi All, go to Google and enter Alcan Highway- hit search-- there is a LOT of great info there-- history as it happened. If you are interested, find a publication called The Milepost- it is a complete description of the highway and the sights you will see as you travel along-- if you make the trip, the book is a "must have". Great trip but you need a couple of months to REALLY enjoy it to the fullest.
