What would you all recommend for a 55 second series with a SB 350 - power or manual rack?

I am getting ready to buy an IFS kit from No limit Engineering and I am not totally sure which one to get.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

As a side note.....any feedback on No Limit as an IFS kit manufacturer?

Thanks,

Ross

Let's see, small block for plenty of power, IFS for smooth ride, why would you want a manual rack to make parking it somewhat of a chore? Course, I'm over 50 so I consider those convenience factors more than I used to.

Good point.

I just wasn't sure how difficult it is to get the power part of the power steering hooked up.

This is my first attempt at this type of project.

I haven't made the IFS conversion myself but if the kit comes with a rack, all the engineering should be done. Location of the rack and it's mounts should be straight forward. The nice thing about using the SBC is the brackets and pumps to go with power steering are easy to find (Jegs and dozens of others). Check to see if the rack is designed for a chevy pump as there is a difference in pump pressure that can cause the steering to feel over-boosted if you match a ford rack to a chevy pump. There are solutions to the problem but you should know what you are getting into up front. Other bolters may know if the No Limit kit has any problems. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. I might be there sometime next year.

If you are considering some big tires up front, power is the way to go. You can get adapters for Chevy pumps to Ford boxes if required.

The solution to the pressure issue comes in the form of a washer kit for the pump control valve. Available at most speed shops, less than $10.

I went with the TCI M2 Kit and power rack and pinion steering.I really like the power steering and it aint that much more work put it in.Just make sure your pump pressure matches the rack pressure. I used a GM power steering pump, and TCI units use a TBird rack ,so I had to get a pressure reducing valve for my
pump. GM puts out 1300 PSI, whereas the TBird unit calls for 800 PSI.Anyway power is the way to go.

Thanks for all of the information.

Looks like I am going with power. I will check with No Limit to see what rack is included with the kit and how much pressure the rack will require. If I recall correctly, the power rack setup comes with a matching pump.

Thanks again everyone!

not having the right pressure pump will blow the seals. i know i purchased a new saginaw for my pacer ifs on my 54 and it blew the seals three times, once after ten feet of driving so be very careful. even the power reducer valve didn't help.. now i have a pacer pump. ron

Hello dale937 & rfs56trk I too am fitting the Mustang2 Power rack with the Chevy pump.
Can you tell me where you got your reduction valve?
My buddy didn't use this on his '51' and the steering was 'twitchy' to say the least!

I bought my unit locally from a TCI dealer. When I told him of my problem,he went to his tool chest and handed me a pressure reduction valve for my GM pump.I really dont know where he originally got it from, but it worked for me.Check around at the aftermarket suppliers,Brothers,Chevy Duty,Golden State, etc.I am sure one of them will have the valve. When you buy your unit ask them what power rack they use.Like I posted before the GM pumps put out about 1300 PSI,wheras TBird units operate at 800 PSI,so the GM pump will blow the seals in a Ford rack.If the unit you are buying has a pump included you are good to go.

The last one that I did I used the washer kit from Bill's Hot Rod. It is relatively a straight foreward procedure, remove the fitting from the pump, remove the control valve, dissassemble and add the washers as indicated in the instructions, reassemble. I think it came from Speedway or Jegs.

I owned a '49 that I installed a MII front clip with a manual rack. While it was significantly easier to turn than the original straight axel, I often times wished that I had went with a power rack, esp. when trying to park in a tight spot.
