The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts How big?

Been thinking about picking up a big bolt to use for a hauler for my street/strip car. It's 45 miles to the track and I'll be in big trouble if I ever blow anything up. I have been picturing a long wheel base TF 2 ton, using a flatbed off of a more modern hauler with all the tilt stuff. Is this feasable? Haven't found a truck yet, just tossing around ideas. Car weight is approx. 3200 lbs.

Sure its possible. There is an AD Chevy car hauler I see at local shows. I've photographed it several times and realized the second time that I never shoot the car, just the truck.

A friend of ours here in our local ATHS Chapter has a '52 Ferd 2-ton with it's original drivetrain that he's completely restored and had Chevron mount a rollback body on it. It works great -- we convoyed with him to Winchester, VA for the show there when he was hauling his Model A truck on the back and he only slowed down some on the big hills. He might have put different gearing in the rear end.

Not that you need to go buy a new custom set up from a major manufacturer, just showing you that it's feasible without going crazy with the drivetrain. If you'd like to ask him about it, just pm me and I will put you in touch with John.

I figure the speed can't be much worse than 4.56s behind a big block. 65 is really way too much for long distance travel, 55 is ok, it's only about 3200 rpm. If I do this right I can also use it on other weekends for hauling rocks, gravel and dirt for yard projects with some sideboards.

I'm currently working on a'49 6400 grain dump truck that I intend to use for a car hauler. I have been watching for a used rollback unit. I have not seen many as I belive the beds are put back on new trucks when the truck is replaced. I will probably extend my 13 ft bed to 18 feet and use slide out ramps and winch the towed vehicle on to the truck.

I have been considering using a mobile home frame I have to make a long trailer. A tow/recovery friend of mine said that(at least in Texas) I wouldn't have to worry about CDL/commercial registration/comm. insurance. He said that as long as the car isn't on (or attached physically to) the truck, it's like having a pickup and a utility trailer.

I love the idea of putting a roll-back on a 2-ton, and I have often thought about doing so. I am not a tow driver(except my own private tasks), but I was worried about finding that one state trooper that wanted to write every ticket he could think of.(Murphy's Law)
