Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 50 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 50 | I have been told a power glide car 52-54 had a 335 gear in it, does anyone know if the 52-54 car that had a 3 speed std trans, what the gears would have been ? I want to put another torque tube rear end in my 52 3100, with less gear, so the question. thanks | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,733 | I don't really know but I'd bet that it is geared lower than 3:35 as that was the ratio in 57' for a 283 powered car with AT. Sticks were were 3:55 w/ V8's an 3 speed. OD's had 4:11. So it doesn't add up that they would have used a 3:35 behind a six in 52'. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2002 Posts: 455 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2002 Posts: 455 | Only 53 and 54 PG car rear gears were 3.55 The lowest gear ratio available for torque tubes. Earlier PG and all stick used to have 3.73 or 4.11 The car torque tube and gears will only interchange with other 40s and 50s torque tube cars. 40s and 50s Truck rear housings are round, cars are oval. The car 3.55 ring and pinion will not fit the truck carrier, but I believe those may be swapped.
The easiest way to upgrade the 3100 truck rear with 3.55 gears and keeping the original torque tube is going with the aftermarket r&p kit.

I have a 52 donor car with PowerGlide and I thought a 3:55 rear. I was planning to install the entire rear/tt assy into my 53 3100 and swap out the axels to retain the 6 lug wheel pattern. Am I hearing that this won't work? And, if I mis-understood, will the axels swap out. Maybe your right and I should forget the whole thing and go the aftermarket r&p route but I'd still like to know. Any advice is appreciated. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 75 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 75 | I've been intending to post this question but since this string appeared I'll ask it now. Car axle is narrower and torque tube is shorter. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 75 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 75 | Thanks. I'll throw in the towel on that idea. It was good while it lasted. Glad I didn't go ahead with it though. This site saved me a lot of headache. Now on to the next one. Sorry about the double entry. My internet went down just as I was attempting to submit and ended up twice. | | |
