Okay so im looking into getting classic car insurance on my 63 c10. I know a lot of them require that you can only put so many miles on them within a year so in order to do that I would probably have to have my odometer working, but it isnt working right now. Its stuck on like 310000 or something like that. I cant run out and check because im at school in NC and the truck is in MD. Anyway, just checking to see if anyone has advice for where to start with that. Thanks.

I have insurance with restricted mileage. At the time they asked me the mileage, my odometer was broken. Since they didn't ask anything about the truck's condition, I answered their question truthfully.

Since then, I've replaced the odometer with another unit that works just fine. I haven't yet come to my renewal date, but I doubt they will ask any questions, especially once they have the check in hand.

There is no law that I'm aware of in my state that requires me to notify my insurance company if I modify the odometer. The only law I'm aware of regarding odometers is during titling, and that requires me to state whether the odometer reading is accurate. It hasn't been accurate since it turned over 99,999 miles.

You wrote that it is stuck on 310000. Unless you've changed odometers, I bet it doesn't clock that high. If yours is like mine, it turns over at 99,999 going back to 00000.0

My recommendation is to answer their question truthfully and leave it at that.

There are numerous places that rebuild speedos. They can set the odometer reading anywhere you want it.

thanks for the advice guys. and i threw 3100000 out there cause thats what i think its on, i could be adding a zero on or something ill have someone check for me at home. anyway, any recommendations on places to send it?

You might do a search at Hemmings motor news. They have a lot of folks advertising speedo rebuilds there. Also I would check your local/area yellow pages. It can be a bit of a hassle if you have to return it for whatever reason when the rebuilder is clear across the country.

If the speedometer also does not work, you may omly need a new cable. They are inexpensive and easy to install.

Pull the cluster out of the dash and rig a power drill to the odometer. Spin it up to see what moves or doesn't move. You should see the tenths rotate as well as the speedo needle indicate. (Make sure you rotate the drill in the proper direction!)

If you get no movement of the tenths, or if the tenths don't index the mile wheel(s), then your odometer is dead. I simply purchased another odometer from an Oklahoma guy at a swap meet for $20 and reinstalled it. DJ turned you on to a place that rebuilds.

If you get movement, then the problem is probably with the cable between the odometer and the transmission, mentioned by Doug.
