Hey does any one know how to remove the rear pinion seal? Do you just loosen the big nut, pull the universal off and take the dust cover off. And then what? Do I need special tools? Any tricks?

Hy Mike Shepard, depending on the size of the rear axle, it can be a fairly simple. As you describe remove the yoke, the cover may come with it, then pry out the old seal and install the new one. Check the yokes seal surface for grooves, if it is badly worn you can probably find a "speedi-sleeve" to repair it, hope that helps.

Where do you find pinion seals for the old beaters? I personally have had some trouble finding one for the 54 HO72.

If it's a 1/2 ton you pull the yoke & pry out the seal like 3B stated. If it,s a larger truck after you pull the yoke & the flange that holds the seal. On a 1/2 ton mark the position of the nut compared to the shaft & tighten it back to the same place. If it turns too easy put some thread locker on it. On a larger truck put the flange on so you have acsess to the cotter pin hole. Tighten the nut very tight & go a little further to line up the cotter pin hole. Any parts store ought to be able to get the seal for you. I can look up the part number tomorrow but maybe another bolter will come up with it before then.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

If its not a 1/2 ton truck, try National Seal # 41130N. It measures 2.598" x 3.481" x 0.50"
