Will a plastic cased cable be quieter? Or is it in the head?

Yer getting that clicking sound too, eh?

Mine does it when it gets cold out... not sure why though.

Remove the cable and clean out all the old grease. Try to get some graphite powder inside. That should solve it. Mine has stopped its noisiness after this treatment!

If you hear a ticking/clicking sound, it is probably the cable. Pull the cable out of the casing, clean it and grease it as has been suggested. Look for worn spots or broken wires in the cable. Worn spots may indicate a kink in the casing, in which case you may need to replace the casing- but not necessaily, if you can straighten it. The cable itself can be replaced separately from the casing.

If the noise you hear is intermittent buzzing or squealing, the head needs to be repaired. Speedometer shops can handle that for you.

my 49's cable made a winding noise and then after a day or two the cable broke, i bought a new one from what was Chevy Duty, and is now Classic Parts of America,-I think, its been a long time since i had to buy anything for it
