Someone told me that an s10 tranny would bolt up to a 235 chevy motor if you shorten the shaft. Is this true? Can you adapt an s10 automatic tranny to a 235? Or is there an automatic tranny that works with the chevy 235?
Thanks!
Steve///

For an automatic swap, you will need to get a bellhousing adapter. Buffalo Steve, and Tom Langdon sell them.

The s10 5 speed is a good transmission swap in an old truck. There are some transmissions out there that may be better for higher powered motors, but the t5 matches up well to the output of a 235.

I have a list of what parts to use and how to go about it if you have the 9" Clutch. The nice part is you get to keep the stomp starter if you want and the location for the shifter is perfect. It looks stock, but I am able to hit the highway doing 70mph at 2100-2300rpm in 5th/4th The most difficult part is finding the right t-5 transmission and cutting the input shaft down, the throwout bearing shaft down and extending the splines on the input shaft. The other part is you have to swap out the rear differential. My diff came out of a 98 firebird/camaro. Was a 2.73:1 ratio with a eaton posi locker in it. Had to fabricate spring mounts and shock mounts. Also used a driveshaft out of an astro van. A nepco cross over u joint is needed to use the astro van drive shaft. Did not have to cut it, was the correct size. I did it, and it worked flawless 1st time. Here is what I did step by step.

1 - Obtain correct transmission (look at the page with the gear ratios, make sure it has a mechanical speedo output)

2 - Figure out what size flywheel you have. (Mine was a 9" disc)

3 - Get the correct clutch disc, my local napa had to order it. Was about 65.00 for it. (I can provide the part number for the disc.)

4 - Remove your old transmission.

5 - Measure up the pilot bearing shaft length, throw out bearing shaft length and the spline length/depth on the input shaft. Record these numbers.

6 - Transfer the measurements to the t5, measure twice, cut once. I used a air die grinder with a 3" cut off wheel. Make sure that the splines are lengthened accordingly. (This is very important! Many make the mistake of not extending the length causing the clutch disc not to fully disengage.) When grinding the splines in the shaft, extend the splines first by running the cut off wheel at a perfect 90 degrees to the existing input splines. Once you have them extended, match the angle the other splines are on. Take your time.)

7 - check the travel of the disc on the t-5 making sure that you have full travel (you can go past the original length of the original splines, just don't get carried away). (Mine ended right about where the throw out bearing shaft started.)

8 - Re-install newly modified t5. May want to replace the throw out bearing and the pilot bearing. Or have flywheel resurfaced (use common practice here)

9 - Strongly suggest a aftermarket transmission crossmember. There are several that sell them online usualy right around 60 bucks.

10 - Transmission mount. Standard GM automatic Th350 trans mount will work fine from a camaro or firebird.

If you need help or have questions, let me know. I'd be glad to help. The modifications are all documented in my project journal in my signature. A direct link is here:
