I just aquired said truck, I traded some axles and a frame and some junk cab metal from two 4wd chevys for it. It was formerly an oilfield winch truck, all steel bed, winch, poles, giant steel front bumper, it's got a big block and a four speed, no p/s and it is not a split shift rear end. It's got 8.25x20 steer tires all the way around and the cab has some rust through in a few places in the cab and on the front fenders, all the glass is good and it runs and the winch works! The brakes don't work as all the other two ton trucks I seem to buy, but that will be okay. Now, my questions are, has anyone ever had experience with a Tulsa winch model 3754? How could I tell if this is a tall deck motor compared to a "regular" big block? I've checked Tulsa winch's website and can't seem to find any info on this winch, and I don't have anything with a big block in it to compare this motor to. Also, is there a link where I could find what the rear end ratios might have been for this particular year and model? I think this was a pretty good deal, as I didn't have any money tied up in the junk I traded for it, and it wasn't doing any good sitting in my pasture rusting away....Thanks again

Rob I have worked on a lot of Tulsa winches but I don't have any info on them or remember any model numbers with some pictures and what you need to know maybe you can jog my memory.
As far as your motor here is a link to Chevy casting numbers it should tell you all you need to know.

I must concur with 3B on the engine size as far as original goes. I've never seen anything smaller than a C60 with an optional larger V8 which would have been the 366 CID. It "looks" like a larger 427 and shares the same block design. Of course it could have been changed so who knows. All truck 427's were tall deck motors and the cars were shorter deck heigths so that may account for your confusion.

I'll do some research on the Tulsa winch for you as I've sold them and repaired a few over the years so maybe something will turn up. I think it is a straight PTO drive, i.e., not a hydraulic driven winch. Does it have a forward and reverse PTO?

Thanks for the link and tips guys. I know for sure it's a big block, but wasn't sure how to distinguish a tall deck from a car motor. None the less, I'll get the block info in the next few days and reference it to the mortec link. I don't guess I really need to know which engine it is "yet", as the ignition tune up parts readily interchange with most gm V8s and carb kits are available specific to the carb but it would be reassuring to know what's under the hood of what I'm driving around out here. I've got the carb sitting in the vat as we speak and recieved the kit for it today, so that part is pretty well down hill from here. As for the winch, it is definately pto driven, forward and reverse, has a lever for free spool, and a lever for the drum brake. The cable is probably in the 3/4" range and there may be approx 100' on it, with room for more. I'm thinking the bed, winch and poles setup may very well be worth the junk I traded for this, but it moves under it's own power so that's a plus to. I'll keep you all informed on anything major in the upcoming future and in the mean time try to get some pics posted on here.......Anyone have a clue on the single speed rear end ratio available for this truck??? I guess being a 40 series, it's considered a 1 1/4 ton truck?? Thanks again

look at where the cylinder heads bolt to the block right above the top waterpump bolts. If the top of the waterpump is even with the deck (top of the block) it's a car engine. If the deck is about 1/2" higher the the waterpump it's a truck engine. Hope this helps.

Hy partsmaster, 11,000lb. axle 1967-74 6.17 ratio pinion stamped 3652522 or 3652549, 13,500lb. axle 6.4 ratio pinion stamped 3711483, the stamping will be on the end of the pinion where the yoke bolts on, hope that helps.

It's probably considered a 1 1/2 ton, but check the GVW Rating on the tag.

Partsmaster: I have been unable to locate any information the Tulsa winch model 3754 you indicated. However they did make a model 37 PTO. Where did you get the model number from, winch or PTO? Sorry I haven't been of more help.

53moneypit-I got the model number off the side of the winch itself. Do you know what the model 37 is rated at by chance? You've been plenty of help and I appreciate you taking time to read all this mess and research for me...

Thanks again
Rob

PTO's do have a torque rating but I have no further info on the old Tulsa. They haven't built PTO's for a long time so little info still around. PTO's should be the weak link in a setup, i.e., less torque rating than the transmission gear driving it because it should be less expensive and a lot easier to repair. Not always the case however. I've made a note to myself and if I find something more I'll e-mail you.

Alright, by torque rating, are you talking about how many pounds it is rated to pull(i.e.-10,000lbs, 25,000lbs, etc)? So Tulsa winch no longer builds pto operated winches?? I guess I was thinking pto winches were more common than they really are, so is everything pretty much going to hydraulic these days in the heavy stuff?? Thanks again!
