I have this transmission 1352-211 GM 1992 S-Truck 2.5 L4 code R, reverse 3.70, 1st 3.97, 2nd 2.34, 3rd 1.48, 4th 1.10, 5th 0.72 . I was told it was 1989. It looks like 1992. Will the bolt pattern fit my 1952 3100 with the 235 that is in there now? Does anyone know if the tail section can be changed for a manual speedometer drive. The info is from.

Thanks, Some of my HAM radio buddies think we can come up with a adjustable pulse width modulated dc motor to drive the mechanical speedometer. I might just spring for the $300.

Thanks

Another way to look at using the electronic speedo T5, is that we know the little X-box is pricey, but possibly a money-saver in the long run. With the electronic T5's, you're getting a W/C transmission that's years newer with possibly less mileage, and the new "X-boxes" allow you to calibrate your speedo through the box. No more getting it "almost" on the money by swapping out little gears under the vehicle.

Last time I checked, they weren't giving away T5 rebuilds on worn out earlier transmissions with high mileage, and being able to have a properly calibrated speedo might just save you from a speeding ticket. When you stack these up against the price of a conversion box, and consider the ease of making speed calibration adjustments at the box, it may not be such a bad deal.

I wouldn't dismiss a good W/C electronic T5 just so I could avoid adding the conversion box.

The bolt pattern fit,s but you have to drill the holes out to 1/2 in. There are other mods. that are covered in the tech section & previous posts. You can use the tail housing from the older trans. Even a T-4 will fit. Be shure to get the gears & retainer parts. Read directions before removeing the tail houseing. It doesn,t just unbolt & pull off. You might consider a set of custom gauges with electronic speedo.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Thanks, I have been looking at the web shots from several of the t5 wizzards. I love pictures. The only thing that I don't see is how you handle the clutch fork. I see the t5 has a plate on the side that the fork could be extended out of, instead of using the slave cylinder rod. I intend to use the vega disk and stock pressure plate. I would assume the throw out should be the stock s-10, but not sure.

thanks Neil

Hi Neil,

You use the stock AD clutch fork, AD throwout bearing (that matches the type of pressure plate you're using), and AD clutch pedal linkage. The fork has a little internal spring at the pivot point that locks it onto the pivot ball that's threaded into the driver's side of the bell housing. You'll want to slide your throwout bearing on the transmission pilot shaft, have your clutch fork snapped in place on the pivot ball and then as you seat your transmission, engage the fork ends in the TO bearing grooves. This has proven to be the easiest way to get everything lined up during the install. I like to have the transmission in gear so I can rotate the output shaft to mate with the clutch disc splines. I've added the fork after having the transmission installed but it's a tight fit and it doesn't fall into place easily. Now's a good time to install your rubber fork boot.

BEFORE your final installation you'll want to install the T5 without the clutch/pressure plate installed to check to make sure your transmission mates up okay before you add the clutch pack. You'll also want to slide the disc on the mainshaft to make sure it slides back past the trimmed splines to insure your disc will FULLY release. Once you've made sure your fit is okay you're ready to complete the install. A dab of grease on the pivot ball and a light coat on the TO brg pilot shaft (then wipe the light coat off lightly with a rag) and you're ready to go.

I'm sure others have done it a bit differently but this has always worked for me and I've had NO problems with getting a full release of the clutch disc. Hope this helps with your installation.

Dave

Neil - My experience is if I put a tach. in my ride pretty soon I don't even use the speedo. Without even trying you just start to remember the 3 or 4 most used speeds as a result of a RPM in a particular gear.

Thanks Fla54, that is just what I was needing to know. I hope to have that walls up on the shop in the next few weeks and then the fun begins. I love this truck. I rebuilt the rochester carb last week and it runs like a top. I am thinking about a weber 2 barrel though. I decided on new front calipers and rotors and the berring and bracket kit. I am amazed at how cheep the calipers are for the camero.

Desertdog That is what I have had to do in the MGA I can tell you within a few mph just by the sound of the engine. I also hav a gps the give a very good speed reading.

OK for the pulse generator for either a vdo or auto electronic speedo, you can get the auto meter generator for approx 70.00 through the speed shops. I have used the vdo speedos in our dune buggies for the last 7 years and that was the only adaptor that we had to use, just hook up a cale from the drive to the generator and program the speepdo as required, and on the trannys with the electronic output, you can bypass this by getting a pulse generator that can read magnets installed on your driveline, I have to look up the brand of it, thats what I had to use on our bradley to get a signal. I`ll find and post it here Mike Bourg

the sender that i am talking about is a vdo 340-020 magnetic pickup sender, it is 2" long and has a 7/8" thraed on the body for adjustment. the only other thing you need is some 1/4" magnets to install on your drive shaft, eight will work just fine.Mike Bourg

Great conversation: Do the WC as well as NWC T5 transmissions use Dextron 2? Mine is non world class, being of the older variety from a S10.
