i'm resurecting a 1960 c60. rebuilt the carb, drained the old gas, replaced points, condensor, rotor, cap, wires and plugs. i'm going to put a little oil in the cylinders and spin to get some oil pressure. anything else i should do?

i'm curious about the strange piping system on the engine. is it an external oil system? this is a 261. i'm familiar with later 291s and small blocks but this is new to me. is there a filter?

thanks.

If it has a filter, it will probably bolted with U clamps to the manifold. Change the oil first before even spinning it over. A new fuel filter before the fuel pump would be a good idea.

Keep us up to date in how it goes.

there is some debate as to whether it does any good but i figure it does no harm to pull distributor and spin the oil pump with a drill to run fresh oil thru the system

its alive! idles nice and smooth. now i need to figure out how check adjust the timing. i was looking for timing tabs and marks on the front of the crank pulleys. i guess its on the flywheel? **edit, did some searching on the forum, looks like i need to time through the window above the starter.

Look for a 1/8" Steel ball bearing staked into the flywheel...
Its your timing mark...

bucket,

That's a fine engine. It is set up for a full-flow oil filtration system (and, as posted in another thread, yours has some of the parts from a factory PCV system).

Does your valve cover have slits in the top of it?

The 1960 Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual has information regarding that engine (I have been running that engine in one truck or another since 1972 - I got it out of school bus in a junk yard).

thanks for the info & compliments. unfortunately the worst rust is above the windshield, rendering the cab junk if i were to restore.

no slits on the valve cover. just the "chevrolet" script and oil cap.

those are known for rust there and on the back in same area there may be patch panels available.also door sills, back portion of the fenders and the front of the hoods.

Great looking engine. Glad is was so easy to get running. You could try timing it by ear, but I'd suggest that you get one of those tapes that puts the timing marks on the front crank hub.

I got a question for you, I see in your pictures that you towed it with a pickup on a car trailer, I want to tow my C50 up to my camp in maine, 2.5 hrs away for me. How did it tow, how long is the deck on the trailer, and does the trailer have brakes? people have told me here you can't tow a big bolt with a pickup. I got a 1990 k2500 with a 350 tbi and 400 tranny. How much do you think your c60 weighs?

not sure how it would compare . I towed my 54 1.5 ton with mid to light duty wrecker body. no problem 2500hd two wheel drive 6.0 gas, allison transmission. 18 foot 7000lb dual axle trailer brakes on both axles. it was comfortable at 60mph. this was on flatland few grades are very slight here.

It towed really well but i only went about 20 miles but 10 of that was on I-35. more weight was obviously on the tounge to prevent swaying. i took it real easy.

Tow vehicle was my 67 c20 which i have set up for towing with a healthy 327, 4:11 rear, heavy duty rear overloads and an electric brake controller. Trailer is an 18' dovetail with brakes but as you can see the c60 barely fit. if i were going long distance i probably would have used my 70 i ton, which was not running when i picked up the 60.

i'm not sure how much the 6o weighs but i don't think it is as much as you might think. 6 cyl engine, no bed or hoist. its big but there is a lot of air space in there.

That's what I was thinking, probably would be ok if you had brakes on the trailer. I'm suprised it fit on a 18' trailer that's why I was wondering.
