Still a lot of things to do and finish, but as a driver, Jeb is now ready for the road. As best as I can tell, this will be the first time since 1982 that this truck has been registered AND inspected.
I don't expect any problems at the inspection station, but pray for me anyway. I've been through a lot with this truck over the last year since I bought it. Complete new wiring, new rebuilt 350 SBC and new rebuilt TH350. Camaro frontend, all new discs, calipers, rear drums and other brake parts. New guages, Suburban Seats, three-point harnesses. New battery, starter, one-wire alternator, headers, fuel tank and sender, new A/C and heat from Southern Rods and Air, freshly rebuilt tilt steering from 76 Chevy Pickup, topped with an El Camino Steering Wheel.
I've had one situation after another. The 305 I had intended to use, that "just needed a cam" turned out to need new rings and is now sitting on a stand in the corner. The 350 longblock I bought turned out to have too large a cam. I found that out only after everything was buttoned up, so I eneded up taking the frontend apart agian to get the cam switched out to a Summit 1102. The PO used metric lug nuts on the wheels instead of SAE. Had me thinking the studs were stripped, but was relieved to find out it just needed new SAE nuts. Fought day before yesterday with the tranny. Spent the morning laying underneath the truck getting a speedometer drive gear on the output shaft. The shop that sold me the tranny forgot to tranfer the gear over from my core. The list goes on and on!!
Still not a whole lot to look at. Then again this is an everyday driver and hauler. I'll patch the lower front fenders eventually, knock out the major dents and put on an inexpensive paint job. I don't want to be overprotective, and I will be if I get the ol' boy too gussied up! LOL! Will take some photos and send them to Peg to update the Gallery on Jeb. As I said I have a few final touches to make on the 56, then have to do a quick rear brake job on the wife's 67 Mustang Convertible, then I'll jump back on Sparky. Cab and bed are painted. Need to paint rear and front fenders, running boards and hood, then final assembly. Hopefully, I'll have it done by this Summer. Clint, how's that 42 coming along?
