I just wanted to let you know that if anyone needs help with paint codes, in any aspect, to let me know. I work for an Autobody and Paint Supplier, so I have access to pretty much every code that's out there, and can cross reference them into the paints that are currently used. It's not a problem or a hard task, so feel free to ask. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 3,596 | Jenny,

You reading my mind? I just scored a page from a DuPont paint chip catalog for 1952 Chevy trucks in hopes of matching that. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | Hey Jenny,
Something tells me you're going to be very popular around here. Seems every few days someone is asking about paint codes. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | PPG and Dupont codes are available in this Stovebolt.com Tech Tip. At the bottom of the Tech Tip are instructions on how to find out from PPG the modern offset code and paint name. If you do not have a PPG jobber near you (from which to buy the paint), you might/should be able to use the PPG offset name and year to find a match in another line of paints. 1947-52 Mariner Blue Dupont: 63203 PPG: 10419 The 1953 and later Mariner Blue is a different shade/formula (PPG can deal with this but Dupont shows the same code for all years). I don't have any chips for engines, but if I had to guess, I think it would be hugger orange. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | phildirt2,
- What is the year of the engine? - Does the engine have hydraulic or mechanical lifters? - Is there a code pressed into the ledge to the rear of where the distributor enters the block?
If it is a 235 with hydraulic lifters, it's most likely a 1953-1962 automobile engine. It's a Blue Flame Six engine and that blue is very much like the Chevy Engine Blue sold in spray cans in most parts stores.

On my 1958 Chevy 3200 (still has factory paint) there isn't a paint code on my ID plate. It is simply stamped "SPEC" which I assume means special. I did look at some '58 chips a while back and it looks as though my truck is painted two-tone Bombay Ivory and Anniversary Gold (which is a 1958 car color). Can you cross reference into paints currently used? Thanks again, Jenny. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 | Hey Mike! Okay, so this is what I have for you. Bombay Ivory has two manufacturer paint codes. They are 701 and 748. I can cross them over, but only into single stage paints. The first one is Centari. The paint code for that one is 72961A. The second one is Imron 5.0. The paint code that corresponds is 72961X. I had a little trouble trying to pull up the Anniversary Gold. The manufacturer code is 918. However, I can't get an exact match to a current formula. The best I could pull is a SpectraMaster color, which the code is YM019K. This one is a base coat. I had to call Dupont, and that is the formula number that they said is the closest match. I hope that this helps you out. Let me know if you need me to try to go farther with the gold. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 | In reference to the Dupont code 63203; when actually put into the ColorNet system, that code pulls up as a Fleet Color for Alaska Railroad. The formula rx date is 1992, and the color name is just "blue". | | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 424 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 424 | Hey Mike! You obviously put a lot of effort into that and I sure appreciate it! I would really like to find the Anniversary Gold in a single stage instead of a base coat but it sounds like it doesn't exist? I'm no paint expert so I'm not sure where I go from here. Any suggestions? THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 | Good Morning Mike, I just got off the phone with Dupont. They can not provide me with a single stage code for the Anniversary Gold for 1958. However, I found a single stage code for 1976 Anniversary Gold. I am not sure if they are the same or not, as to the fact that I can't find my chips right now to compare them. Either way, the code for the '76 is 44167A. It's a Centari code for single stage. You should try to look up a FinishMaster in your state. We have stores all over the country. If you find one, just give them the codes that I gave you, and they should be able to mix it up for you, or give you any further assistance that you may need. If you need more help, though, please feel free to get ahold of me. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 934 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2006 Posts: 934 | Thank you for this offer. I'm working on a 51 GMC 1/2ton. I'm looking for a color code for the "Sun Beige" color. Can't seem to locate any cross references and our NAPA guy looked at me like I had two heads. I can't find one in my system, so I'm going to hunt for the chip book. I seemed to have misplaced it. If worse comes to worse, I'll call Dupont and see what they have. I'll get back to you today, though. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 | Tom~ I can only find a Sun Beige in 1956. There are two mfg codes for it. They are 56-T, and 56-W. I can't pull up a formula with a modern day code, though. My chip book for the '50s is currently MIA. I searched and searched, to no avail. Is Sun Beige the original color for your truck? Or was it repainted later on with that color? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 289 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 289 | Mike, Before you give up on the gold, I would ask them over at http://www.chevytalk.org. Since it was used on'58 Impala's someone with one somewhere must know. VCCA perhaps too. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 2,644 | Yea, I've found that VCCA is a good source for historic information like this. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Dec 2007 Posts: 4 | Thanks Jenny.
I need a current day option / conversion from the 58 chart for the color I believe is called "desert sand".

Thanks, Leo T. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Oct 2007 Posts: 94 | Hey Leo, So here it goes... Bombay Ivory- I can only give you formula numbers for single stage. One is Centari, and the number is 72961A. The other is Imron 5.0 (also a single stage), and the corresponding number is 72961X. Indian Turquoise- This one I can get in single stage and urethane. Centari's number is 73844A. Imron 5.0 is 73844X. It also comes in Nason Fulthane Urethane, which is 73844IB. These are all Dupont formula numbers. Unfortunately, I can not cross them over into PPG, due to the fact that I don't carry it. I believe you can give a PPG dealer the Dupont number, and that they can cross it over into PPG if you'd like. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 16 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 16 | Thanks Jenny, I will pass these numbers over to my painter and see what we have for a match. Thanks for your help! Leo T. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 13 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Nov 2007 Posts: 13 | Hi Jenny - I have a 1951 Canadian-built Chev 1-ton pickup. I received the buildsheet from GM Canada and the exterior paint is "133 - Commercial Maroon". The Stovebolt Tech Tip section with paint info lists "Cape Maroon" as a 1951 color, but that seems to be the closest match name-wise. Does your database include GM Canada paint colors, to see if Cape Maroon is the same as Commercial Maroon? No "maroon" jokes, please. Well, one or two will be OK.
