I'm getting ready to install my recently acquired 3 speed w/ OD. I currently have the stuppy short 3 speed HD transmission. I tried to measure it from the bellhousing to the end of the transmission case and got about 12". Can some on tell me how long their 3 speed regular transmission is, because I believe it is the same length as the 3 speed with OD. Or just tell me how long your driveshaft is infront of the carrier bearing. Thanks alot for the help bolters.

I come up with 22" from mounting flange to end of tailshaft housing.

When I did the swap into my '61 Apache, I removed the original 3 speed(Muncie) and replaced with the OD. Exact same length, bolts up same way, same spline count on input and output. No driveshaft mods necessary. Plug 'n play as they say:) If you are using a later Saginaw type unit, I believe the spline count on the output is different, you'll need a different yoke.

Yachtcare, I currently have the Heavy Duty 3 speed. It's short and stumpy so I need to cut down my drive shaft to fit the new OverDrive tranny. It does look like I will need a new yoke for the new tranny, but I have a few lying around and might not be a problem. LONGBOX55, could you measure the front half of your drive shaft, from tranny to carrier bearing, and tell me what you come up with? That would be a HUGE help! Thanks for the info so far fella's.

Well I appreciate it. I guess I can go to a single piece drive shaft, I was just trying to reduce the amount of down time on my truck. I appreciate all the help fella's!!

there is two tail housings for that trans..one is a short guy the other is about 6 inches longer...maybe you can swap the tail housing for a shorty?

You probably won't be able to use a one piece driveshaft. If your 3200 has a 8' bed it probably needs the 2 piece driveshaft. The 55-57 3200's had a 7' bed and had a one piece shaft with the standard 3 speed.
The last time I had a custom driveshaft made up the driveshaft shop said to take the dimensions as follows: Insert the front splined yoke as far as it will go into the trans - pull it back out 1 1/2 inches - measure from the C/L of the front U-joint to the C/L of the rear U-joint (in your case the rear U joint of the front shaft). Give them that dimension and they will make up a shaft.

The standard 3 speed was available with a long or short tailhousing depending on the year. There is no such thing as a "short" tailhousing Overdrive.

The Warner HD trans is a completely different animal and nothing from the standard 3 sp or OD transmission will interchange with it.
