Can anyone out there help me identify the rear end or gear ratio in my 46 1/2 ton with out taking anything apart. I thought it was the stock rear end but I can only go about 40 without it screaming at me. It is a closed driveline, 235 out of a 56 dual fenton intake with rochesters and fenton dual exhaust, 3 speed on the floor.

It runs great just no top end. Is there a id number on the rear end or a way to figure out the ratio without taking it apart?

I sure hope someone out there knows a fancy trick

Thanks in advance
Brian

If it's original to your pickup it's 4:11. There are lots of options here, I tossed my torque tube rear long time back for open drive line. Went with 57 half ton rear but only 3:90 now stepped up to a 3:08 from a 66 pickup. Best thing about losing the torque tube though is ability to get to a modern trans.

Do you have a tach on that motor? Depending on tire size a pressure oil 235 should drive it a lot faster than 40 even with 4.11 gears.

The screaming may not mean much.

I have a truck, granted with a modern motor, that has 4.11 gears and will easily run 80 mph plus (pulling a loaded trailer). While it has electronic ignition instead of points, internally its just a push rod motor and I doubt turns significantly faster than a good running 235 can.

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...
