For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 | I've searched the forums a couple of times for a part number for an oil filter cartridge for a 216. On one search I found info for a NAPA 1100 cartridge which I bought. It turns out that was too big. Anyone know of one that might fit? Thanks.
It's a small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it.

If it doesn't fit then you have an oddball filter canister and you might get some help by posting a picture of it. Your AC filter accessory or option should look like one of these, scroll: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2447023530098611668jJjVWf Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

My 1946 216.5 C.I. Chevrolet pickup has no oil filter on it at all. There is also no reference in the 1946 Shop Manual about an oil filter. Can this be true? If not, can someone help to guide me through the installation of one? To me it just doesn't make any sense that this engine wouldn't have an oil filter.

I can remember my old 51 came without a defroster, a 60 Ford truck came without a heater. Those and many other "options" became regular equipment as completion pushed. I also had a 55 Chevy two door that came without an oil filter. It was an option but a good idea to add one when making the purchase or later on when you could afford it.

So if you wanted an oil filter it was not standard equipment you had to buy it. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | I guess this makes a good case for the edit function Brad! A good example or how carfully we need to composer a reply.
By standard I did not mean that it was a standard item on the vehicle. I meant that the standard oil filter that was offered as an accessory or option would have been and AC filter.

(At least, the one that fits in my truck. YMMV.) For future reference, you can also pick up a Fram C3P. My FLAPS has them, and I saw one in Advance Auto (my backup FLAPS) the last time I was in there looking for fuel filters. Edit: Here are some of the common FLAPS brands and part numbers for that filter cartridge: AC Delco P203 P204 Carquest 85010 85026 NAPA 1010 1026 Purolator P70AC L20701 Quaker State QSC3 L20701 Shell L20701 Valvoline LC3 Warner P3 WIX 51010 51026 For the rest of the cross referenced numbers, visit Fram's Website and look in the product catalog. Search for C3P. Interestingly enough... If your FLAPS doesn't have it, try your local tractor or farm equipment dealership. It seems that everyone and their brother used that cartridge at one point or another.

I think it's the same as the Wix filter that Tiny uses, since the part numbers are identical, except for the first character. It measure 4 1/8" diameter and is 4 13/16" tall, give or take a hair. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | I'll have to try that one on my next oil change. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 393 | I was at the Chev dealer for an unrelated part and the parts guy, who has been selling parts for many years, said people used to put rolls of toilet paper in the filter cannisters. I didn't think to asked but I assumed they used 2 ply!!

That sounds like a crappy idea to me. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 20 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 20 | It was not unusual to have a "filterless" engine back then. I have a couple of 216s here with no filter and one that does. I guess that might explain why the engines wore out quickly. Go figure.

Actually none of the writing or labels are legible, but for some reason I thought it was a Fram. It is about 4 1/2" I.D. and the straight part is about 5" tall. The cone bottom is folded rather than smooth. It looks like some pictures I have seen that were identified as Fram. The NAPA filter that fit perfectly is a Napa Gold 1006. This cross references to a Fram C4. I found this page on the Fram site that list all the applications for this filter and the competitors part numbers. I hope others find this useful. Sorry, this Honeywell page is not as user friendly as I thought. :blat: You have to select the Fram parts link on the lower left. When the new page pops up you can enter C4 in the Fram part number block and get the application and competitor info I want you to see. Maybe it will help somebody someday?!
