I've been thinking about putting a 235 with a T5 in my 1940 1 1/2 ton.

It has a closed drive line but is split. Does anyone know if I can covert a close split to 1/2 open on the front with closed on the back?

Anything is possible with enough time and money.

One thing to consider is that the T-5 was not intended as a heavy duty transmission. If you are going to load this truck or use it to pull heavy loads that transmission isn't likely to do the job.

I don't recall ever looking under a '40. Are you saying it has an open drive shaft right back of the transmission and torque tube from the mid point to the axle? That is oposite of what I've seen under other trucks.

You'll be open drive from trans to rear but I wouldn't use one long drive shaft. A friend of mind did that to his 3/4 ton and the new long drive shaft failed and his truck was totaled. I'd go to your local drive line shop, they will not have a problem making a short drive line to a carrier bearing then the long section. And I believe OldSub is correct, in that the T-5 may not be what you want for GIANT loads but could be fine if not overloaded.

I don't plan on carrying really heavy loads.

Currently is has 2 closed drive shafts. One that goes from the transmission to a split and then another that angels down to the rear.

The first section is 4-5 long and runs parallel to the transmission. I was thinking that I could have a drive shaft made that would run from the T5 to the split. That way I could just leave the rest alone.

My question is about that split point. I was hoping that I could change the transmission side to accept an open drive line.

Or,as popular as it is to ruin good big bolts by putting the cabs on late one ton frames, you could probably find a later big rear end that would fit your frame fairly easily. That might get you a better ratio, open drivelines and easier to find u-joints in the deal. For a transmission, even though it's more expensive,I'd look at the NV4500 5 speed. It's still not a 1-1/2 ton tranny, but it'd hold up to all but the biggest loads you could haul.
