I've look and do not see them...or did I overlook them? I have blasted the brackets/straps and as I put stuff up I like to have it all together. It makes the rebuild seem to go better. Anyone know where they are available. My old one is completely shot. Perhaps fab one out of stainless?? If people are looking to replace in-cab tanks with under-bed tanks, they'd be better off selling their panel body tank and buying one of these underbed conversion tanks (they'd get a better price sellling the panel body tank). This also reminded me of why I buy very little from Chevsofthe40's. I know a couple guys "around here" that can fab me one and I GUARANTEE a lot less than that....but I understand a business is in business to make money!! I guess I'm hoping someone will let me know of a tank that will bolt in, in place of the old one...maybe a jeep tank or van tank etc. I do want to put it in the same place. Thanks for the info guys and I still welcome any input for others. Since I'm in no big hurry right now maybe I need to put in my "order" with the guys I know...if they still do it? I kept my rusted out, cut up and basically destroyed tank to use as a pattern. I also use a torch to melt the "short neck" off where it attached to the tank as well as blast and paint the tube extending to the outside. Oh, what the heck, its just another challenge and I wouldn't even be doing this panel if someone hadn't said it couldn't be done | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 Moderator | | Moderator Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 | I feel for you Alvin. I had been looking for one for a long time and lucked out, finding one less than 30 minutes from home. I wasn't even asking about the tank, he had the rear bullet tail lights and he said "O, do you need seats, gas tank, radio or anything else?" | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | 1953panel, yeah, I understand. I know where a panel is sitting in a field about 45 minutes from here. I have sent letters with self addressed envelops and have yet to get a response. It seems someone lives there "ocassionally" but never at home. Others know about it being there but nothing else. I guess it'll just rot away. Maybe I can get lucky like you did....but in the meantime I'm still going to try get one fabricated but it looks like it will be a while. In the meantime maybe I'll ride and take another try at the one in the field. I just can't/ain't/won't, pay 700 for one from a vendor. I'll run it off a 5 gal gas can first! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 267 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 267 | well I guess i fell lucky then! I have one that will hold a full tank , one that with a few hours with a tig could hold a full tank and one that ,well lets say that when all the acorns are removed might be salvageable. now if i could find a sending unit in one piece. i have 3 of them that i might be able to put together tom

What years' tanks will fit your truck? I'm new to the Stovebolt thing so am learning from you all. Are all panel/suburban gas tanks the same? I am working on a '46 Suburban and may have a spare tank. Won't know for sure until next month when I get back home. Richard

This is my first "AD" truck since back in 1973 but as I see it the gas tank on the panels should be the same from about 47-53 if 1/2 ton. I am not sure about the surburbans but believe they are the same. SOMEONE will correct me if I'm wrong. Mine is a 1952 1/2 ton panel. The tank goes under the passenger side between the driveline and chassis. The neck comes out the side right in front of the fender. I have the straps and they are in good shape but the tank it NOT even close to repairable. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 96 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 96 | Good Morning Chipmunk, I am sure panel and suburban tanks are the same for the the '46, but will a tank from a '46 fit into a newer vehicle. I made new straps for mine and riveted them back on the mounts. If when I get home and check on my other tank and you can use it. No problem, don't think I can use but one tank. Take care, Richard

I used it to seal/coat a tank on my 37 back in 2000 and it is doing just fine. You buy the kit for about 50 bucks but haven't priced them lately. It takes a little time to go through the steps but the end results are nice. Then coat the outside with some regular POR15 and your set to go. I think a little can of the regular stuff come with the kit. Hope this helps. NO....mine is not even close to being repairable. As for the DENT..it can be pulled out if it is not creased. I bought a suction cup at the local parts store some time ago and I have pulled "concave" dents out of doors and even a gas tank. Smooth the place so the suction piece will grab hold...then give it a good yank. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 335 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 335 | thnks for the por info....dent is creased dammmm...i'll have to try something else | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 335 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 335 | if anyone can use my old leaky one from my parts truck..no dents...not too rusted...$ 150.00 plus shipping | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | If you want to let Stovebolters know about things you have for sale or things that you are looking for, please use the appropriate forum in the Swap Meet (Trucks wanted / sale, Parts wanted / sale, Miscellaneous Stovebolt Stuff, Non-GM stuff, Freebies! | | | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | | Anonymous Unregistered | How many of you would be interested in a 47-48 pick-up or 47-55 1st panel, burb or canopy tank made in a polymer or modern plastic style if the price was around $150 - $200 if I knew how many would find homes to cover cost I think I can get it done. Thing is I would need to sell about 80 of the little buggers to cover cost.
Send me a PM I would like one myself so there is one Mike | | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 4,252 "Hey! I sound like Darth Vader!! | | "Hey! I sound like Darth Vader!! Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 4,252 | Yep, IF it was customizable ( i.e. add an intank pump, aftermarket sender, etc.) | | | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | | Anonymous Unregistered | That is what the guys at both manufacture company said so it would have an adaptor for a original type sending unit or you could used it with out the adaptor and put in a pump/sender for like a fuel injected system the thought would also to make brackets for the pickups (for those that wish to relocate the tank out of the cab) the thing here is that it would be a 16 gal tank like original, some have said it would be too small but it would still allow for a factory type location for the spare tire. | | | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | | Anonymous Unregistered | Well you can't go forward any for the angled gusset on the cross member just in front of the park brake bar and there is a cross member just to the rear. I have thought about angling forward to match the gusset it might add a gal or two but that would not look to original to the more stock guys. I have been looking at this for over a good year now any thoughts you might have I'll be glad to hear (or even read). BUT as luck has it a very nice and generous stovebolter gave me a tank for the cost of shipping. It is here and in great shape. The downside is that is it off a one ton panel and is longer than my original and will hit the gusset mentioned above. NOW the challenge is up to my son in law who welds for a living. He says he can shorten it up for me to original and guarantee it. For him its probably a piece of cake and for me its just a small repayment on some of the things I do for him including letting him use my shop!!!! I still think it would be great. There are lots of AD's on the road. Good luck on your project. Heck, I may still end up needing one??!! We'll see by late next week.
Edit: just for those who may be wondering the one ton panel tank is about 32 inches long and the one on my 1/2 ton panel is about 24". Not exact but close. The height and depth are about the same. | | | | | | Anonymous Unregistered | | Anonymous Unregistered | Alvin, well I have just cleaned and sealed the inside n outside of one of my own off my Chevy burb I'm planning on using for a driver. I do know that the one on my GMC is in a bit worse shape. I have also a really nice one ton tank it sure is handy having someone that can do some great welding. I also like to help guys be able to have parts that they need I'm sure you have seen a few more panel, burb and canopy parts (and working on a few more now)in the catalog. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 595 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 595 | did they change in 54' or are they the same as 47'-53'? unless your doing a "stock resto" having a tank built seems like a simple task. the money they want for a repro is *$&@#! my burb isn't stock now so using one from a later car/truck isn,t going to lower the "fun factor" of my burb. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | All good reading guys but I think I may have made a bad statement above. I said my 1/2 ton tank is about 24 inches long and the one off a one tone is about 32inchs long.....the 32 inch tank is off, I think, a 1 1/2 ton. It can be made to work which is what I am going to do...... BUT from what Mike is saying the one ton PANELS really are longer and won't fit due to the crossmember. That makes since to me unless the one ton uses the same as a 1/2 ton. I'm sorry if I caused any confusing by me makeing a bad statement but when I was getting the tank I thought it was off a one ton panel until I found out different just a few days ago. So, are we straight or did I just "muddy" the waters more? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | The 1 ton Panel gas tank holds 18 gallons and the 1/2 ton Panel gas tank holds 16 gallons (47-55).
It looks like the Master Parts Book lists a different gas tank for 54/55 1/2 ton panel body trucks (listed as an external gas tank for 1/2 ton, so I assume it is for panel body).

| | | | | | OLTrucks Unregistered | | OLTrucks Unregistered | Yeah in 1954 the gas fed from the sender unlike the 47-53 that came from the front lower part of the tank, I would say that is what would be different (just a guess here) Mike | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,269 | Mike, I think your guess is correct. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 595 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 595 | guess i need to crawl under my 54' burb and check this out. sounds like i need to compare it to my 56' panel tank to see if they are the same if not sounds like a 54' burb'/panel tank is rare? lol! | | | | | | OLTrucks Unregistered | | OLTrucks Unregistered | 10 micron Oh they not rare at all, golly Now where do you park yours and do you keep a jack and stands handy?
