Around here we have a place called Carson's Nut and Bolt that have or can get most of what you need. I think they are a chain but may not be in your area. I personally have good luck at an old Ace Hardware here in my little town. It has a great bolt/nut section and all labeled. We believe the closest standard bolt to your original is called a "step bolt". The reprint GM assembly manual we sell shows it to be a regular carriage bolt, but originals we have checked are a step bolt. It is like a carriage bolt but the head is larger diameter, 13/16", and not as tall as a regular step bolt. You may have trouble finding it in local hardware stores but it is worth a try. 1/4" thread diameter and 5/8 or 3/4 long with square shoulder under the head. We stock them, part number 100317.

The original bolts in the steps are slightly domed or rounded on the top of the head, but not as much as a regular carriage bolt. The head is about 1/8" tall on the original step bolts, which is greater than that of a 1/4" elevator bolt and less than a carriage bolt.

I have found bolts that would work in stores but not original looking because of the camparatively large diameter and subtle curve of the head. I'm going to make hundreds of "little" decisions which will add up so I'm going to order the correct parts.
