The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Making a Stovebolt Bed Stripping bed wood

I'm going to be re-finishing my bed wood soon, they are coated with pelucid right now. What should I use to remove/strip it without damaging the wood? Some of it is already peeling off without any help at all. :confused:

Longbox, I re-did my 37's oak wood bed last winter and here is what I did and it came out very nice. I took the boards to a guy who built cabinets for me and had him to run them through his planer. He took off just enough to get all the old finish off and down to "new" wood. A couple of them had "cupped" just a bit so we ran them through a second time. The amazing part is I know how thick they were to start with and after he got done it seems they still measured almost the exact same thing. I had him to do BOTH sides. Man did it save me money for stipper and a lot of work sanding etc. He was going to do it as a favor for me but I handed him a $20 and told him to have lunch on me that stripper would have cost me that much!! Hope this helps.

Unless you plan on keeping it out of the elements, I recommend just oiling the wood.
