I have been told that all you have to do is cut the input shaft about 1/2 inch and then it bolts directly into a 50 chevy bell housing with a 235ci with no other modifications. Is this true? Are flywheel or clutch mods necessary? The tranny is out of a 1988 chevy S-10 with a mechanical speedo. I have a 3.90 1957 chevy rear end. Will this be a good match as far as ratio's for HWY driving?

1. Do you have to change out the clutch? 2. Do you need to cut off about 1/2 inch of the front input shaft in order to get the tranny to seat to the bellhousing?
I am a novice when it comes to matching these things up. Looking at Jim Carter's tech article on the T-5 makes it seem like you don't change anything other than cutting the input shaft down. That's all

You do need to grind some off the input shaft , and you will need to get a new clutch disc. And probably there won't be enough splines on the input shaft to completly release the clutch. But , you can get past that prety easy , either add splines to input shaft , or grind off some of the splines on the cluth disc. I recently herd that a Jeep Cherokee disc will fit without modifications. Good luck

My truck had a 10 inch clutch on it and I found a clutch at O'Really, Part number RCF4201 it's like 9 7/8 or something very close. Also If you have a 9 Inch Clutch you can use an RCF4190 I believe, It's just under 9 and has the correct splines. I have had no problem disengaging the clutch with this setup, the center part of the disc that hooks to the input shaft looks the same as the one off my old 3 speed (Just diff, Spine).
2. I think we cut 3/8th of the Input shaft and 1/2 inch of the shaft sleeve. Then bored the mount holes out to take the old bolts. You'll also need to put bolts with lockwashers and nuts on the bottom mounts as the old one's screwed into the old tranny and now you just have holes. Once you get your old tranny out sit them side by side and make the T5 match your old one as far as trimming the input and sleeve goes.
I haven't seen Carters Tech Article could you link me please as I can't find it.

I wished I had used that one. I used the "11" inch S-10 van clutch disk, it works fine, but I already know when its time to replace it , I'll have problems all over again. It was not an easy clutch to get when I got it. I had forgoten to mention the through out bearing sleeve had to be shortened in my other post. I did as Mongo did putting trannys side by side and making them look the same, then I stabed it without clutch or presure plate to make sure all was well. Good luck

That's what is in my 49 GMC 3/4 (Canadaian built). Also, how easy will it be to change the drive shaft? I have a torque tube for about 18 inches, a bearing, then an open drive line. I am guessing that the shaft is long enough to need the extra bearing. Will I have to change the bearing, or is there a way to just change the forward shaft?
Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice) \'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run. My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787. Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.
