The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop Tie Rod Ends??

Hi Guys and Gals

After some very slooowww work (2 years), I finally took my 49 3/4Ton in for its safety inspection prior to registering and insuring. Poor thing didn't study hard enough (sure, blame the truck!) and failed . One of the problems is the tie rod ends. They are too loose for my mechanic. Since it is easier (and safer), I will replace them. Problem is, I can't figure out which type I have. According to the 1954 shop manual I have, they appear to be the type reserved for 3/4T Forward Control and 1ton + trucks. The tie rod is hollow and threaded internally, and the ends screw in. The ends don't have the spring -and-socket setup I was expecting.

Is there a modern replacement I can get for this unit, or are the original ends still available? Any help is MUCH appreciated.

Obsolete Chevy has both the originals and the replacement stud types if you want to swap for something of a newer design.

Their website is not the greatest and doesn't have a picture of the tie rod end you're looking for but their catalogue shows them & they are right nice folks & real knowledgeable so they'd probably be willing to FAX you up page 66 from their catalogue & make sure you ordered the right unit.
