You can shut the water off in the summer to reduce the heat flow into the cab or manually adjust the amount of water that will flow through the heater core to get that just right temperature for the desired fan speed.
The valve isn't absolutely necessary to run a heater it is just a way to regulate the water flow through the heater core.

#28458 01/01/2005 9:50 PM | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 230 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 230 | Yes , that's correct and when it begins to leak (it will) don't worry , just go to NAP and order up a Balkamp # 660-1000 kit , it contains the special rubber washer that is what leaks plus a poorly mimiographed page of instructions . list price is well under $10.00 .
Take your time and work over a large towel as there's tiny bits , easily lost .
Take pictures of it from various angles as it is possible to re-assemble it wrong .
if you break off some of the tabs you can solder it back to-gether .
