Been hard to start without a shot of ether. Truck does not run everyday, been used little recently. Today, after many attempts, it finally fired up for less than 10 seconds (running smooth), then shut down and could not restart even with the ether. Could the cold be affecting the fuel pump? Suggestions? How can I get good strong starts even with non-daily use, in winter too...thanks.

Water in the gas, bad fuel pump, fuel line blocked, fuel filter, carb problems or out of gas. First test is for fuel to the carb. Unhook the fuel line to the carb and stick it in a clean, dry clear bottle, like a pop bottle. Have someone crank the engine, you should get gas flowing. If it flows, and is clean, check the carb. If it's dirty, you need to drain the tank, clean the lines and the carb. If no fuel, does fuel flow from the tank, then to the pump.

With all the cold moisture in the air lately I have had 4 cars I worked on have the very similar problem. changed the plugs with good ones and each vehicle started right up
