Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | Need help mounting my 350 and 400 tranny in my 50 chev. The Mustang ifs is in and done. I would like to mount the engine. questions though, is it possible to squeeze the engine in without cutting the firewall? If so, is there room up front for the rad? Use the 350 rad? Mount engine directly onto mustang x-member? How low on the x-member should the engine be? anybody out there whose done this PLEASE help. Thanks.

There should be no need to cut the firewall. The V8 is shorter than the six that the truck was designed around. I have seen many 350/400 combos put in AD series trucks without a so much as a grind mark on the firewall/toeboard area. I can't comment on your cross member, but you should be able to set your radiator shell in place and use that as a guide when setting the motor and tranny.

That would probably give you about an extra 4 inches of clearance. But after looking at many of the modified trucks you should be able to put it in with no big mod's to0 the firewall. I wouldn't attach a mount to the MII cross member. A couple of options there, frame rail engine mounts are available at most HR shops or build your own. If you keep the motor mount pin level with the top of the frame rail should give you a good height for the motor. This will probably give about 2-3 inches clearance from the bottom of your engine to the cross member.
