hi guys, glad to find this forum.I have a 46 ton and a half with a bad tranny. It was formally used as log truck and after the brakes quit he used low gear as a brake till it shelled the teeth.I am planning to make it into a ramp truck to haul a model A **** racecar(also chevy six powered). Is there anything thats adaptable to the original bellhousing other than the trigger reverse that i now have? Also what else would yall recommend as to other modifications needed to haul a max load of 3000 pounds safely down the interstate at 65MPH or so. thanks in advance....(also forgot to say it already has a 261 swapped in).

Sounds like an interesting truck. You need to change your bellhousing to one from a 48-62. (Possibly even earlier than 48?) This will allow you to scrap that crashbox and install an SM420 4 speed with synchronized gears. Also, if you want to cruise anywhere close to 65 mph you'll have to do something about the gearing.

In addition to what Don said, you will need to fabricate a mounting plate for that late model bellhousing to mount your clutch/brake pedals on. Not too difficult but takes some measuring. Several members here have pictures that I'm they will be happy to send you. In addition the SM420 is a open driveshaft design.

This set up in my some what stock 37 PU is not as engineered as Rick's, but has worked smoothly for 6 years. The clutch housing is from a 51 truck.I even managed to adapt the tranny mounted parking brake to a 56 Chevy car 3spd. thanks for the replies guys.i acually got the truck today and found out it is not a 261 like i was told...oh well...it was free anyway and pretty fixable.some has replaced the engine but it appears to just be a later type 235.i guess the 216 hauled one to many loads...thanks again guys
