I am not totaly sure. I think I would like to take the whole box off the frame so I can clean it and the frame. The shaft goes through the frame and the arm is attached, that seems to be the most logical place to disconnect.

Or is the arm clamped on the shaft with a cross bolt, even easier to remove?

There's a groove in the sector shaft that will keep the Pitman arm from coming off if the bolt isn't taken all the way out. Once the bolt is removed, use a 2-jaw puller to persuade the Pitman arm to move if necessary. Sometimes a few medium-firm taps with a BFH will get the job done! On the steering gears with one large nut on the end of the sector shaft, a very heavy duty Pitman arm puller is definitely required.

I got home and put the pitman puller on turned it about ten time with the wrench an pop it was off. I have now dropped the front axel and am all covered in grease from 60 years of oil dripping from my engine.
What a great day.
