Check this out: Timbers from BC Hydro, the electric company now owned by some outfit form Georgia. USA, I mean, not Russia. It hides pretty good on there, look at this: I could almost fake being legal, except for Epic's butt draggin' like that. TWO TONS of payload on there. 5,650# on the drive axle. Not exactly what you'd call compliant, y'know. I drove around a while to see how she'd handle it: No problem. The steering axle didn't even float. I found a 15% grade, and pulled up it at the top of second gear. I could have shifted up if the gears weren't so long. No rise in engine coolant temperature, no stink, nothing. Effortless, apparently. So then I went to a buddy's house and got legal, comparatively speaking. Look at his lawn ornament: Purty nice, huh? I think it's, like, a '69 or somewhere 'round there. nice unit, no problems, but he doesn't want to work it at local cut rates, so it's getting a drom deck, and it's going to be a patio. Cool or what? 1951 3800 Be the change you want to see. -hotshoe

I see from your pics that ya got the Mihindra, do ya like with the little diesel? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 707 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2006 Posts: 707 | Rob; I wouldn't have a single clue what a Mahindra could be if I hadn't researched that Jeep before buying it. This one is actually an '87 Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi built these from 1953 to 1998, originally under contract to Willys-Overland. It has a 2.7l turbo diesel which I like a bunch. Lots of poop - around 100 hp, as compared to my Chevy's 90 - and gets 30-40 mpg, depending on how I drive it. It has a 75 mph top speed (pretty twitchy up there) cruises nicely at 60 mph, but goes further on fuel if it is allowed to stay around 50 or less. I've sourced an overdrive, but it will be a bit spendy, so I'll wait to see if this Jeep survives its first few years of service to me. It probably will: it seems plenty strong, and only had around 35,000 miles when I bought it. 1951 3800 Be the change you want to see. -hotshoe

Not sure how those brakes should work with that much weight, but one of the reasons I put that much on it was to find out how the brakes would handle the load. They were okay: a time or two in traffic when I was cut off approaching a traffic light, it felt as if I was using a lot of what was there, but they did the job. I think, though, that I'll be trying to fine-tune them before loading like that again. It took a good, strong shove on that pedal to bring her down any kind of soon. Okay enough if you're ready - like on snow - but if I was to fully load her regularly, my right leg would get stronger.
Once I lightened her down to maybe 6800 GVW, she was fine. I even did some sportscar stuff on a curve or two, and it was fun! 1951 3800 Be the change you want to see. -hotshoe

I had a 69 chevy 1 ton that had to carry that "extra" load every once in a while. Just remember most trucks will "GO" down the road with a lot more load they can "STOP" with. Also, make sure those tires will carry the load. Your truck is a beauty!

The rims are alloy - lighter and stronger than the originals - and the brakes (along with most everything else under there) are recently overhauled. I looked into buying different wheelnuts when I switched the rims, but my tire guy tells me the old ones are up to spec, and the only thing new nuts would do is prettify the wheels. Well, I went out yesterday and bought chrome center caps to thank the old girl for doing such a good job, so I'd imagine the nuts might be next. But if I did that, I suppose I'd have to start thinking about paint, wouldn't I? 1951 3800 Be the change you want to see. -hotshoe
