Dieseling is usually caused by a hot spot in one or more cylinders, often a glowing bit a carbon. Here is a short, simple explanation.

Replacing the spark plugs
Richening up the idle mixture
Rebuilding the carburator
Adjusting the valves
Running some "Seafoam" or Chem-tool through the tank
Using a plant mister to squirt a small amount of water into the intake when the engine is idling (but not enough to stall the engine)
