I have taken the gas tank out and will replace it as I laid it outside my shop and someone took it. Probably thought it was scrap. It had the fuel line coming out the bottom to the carb. I have heard that some of the replacement tanks do not have this unit in them. What can anyone tell me about this. Do I just use one with fule coming from the sending unit on top.

That maybe the only way you can buy a new one now.

I always assumed that was for safety reasons. With the outlet on the bottom, a broken or disconnected fuel line guarantees a major fuel spill. With it on the top, there is still that potential, but at least a siphon effect is required and not mere gravity.

I agree that you may (and probably should) have to buy a a replacement tank with the fuel line at the top. Which means you will not be able to use your stock sending unit. A word of advice is to ALWAYS ask if the threads are metric as a lot of "reproduction" parts come from china.
Always get a 2nd opinion, especially if I am the source of the 1st opinion.

My 53 has a shutoff valve just after it leaves the cab bottom.
