I would like to keep the auto tranny but want the shift on the column. My question is: what is the best (easiest) thing to do, change out the entire column or can an auto shift be put on my existing 3/tree column?
I dont want a tilt or something too new looking.

| | | | | Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 18 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 18 | Jcade - when I bought my "other" truck from it's previous owner it had been changed from a column shift to an automatic using the the old existing column shift lever. The problem with that is there is no locking mechanism to keep the lever from jumping out of gear. As I drove the truck the lever would move due to vibration and shift from drive into D2...or....sometimes if I hit a bump it would jump down to D1 or reverse. Didn't take me too long to realize that was unsafe and needed to be changed.
When I rebuilt the truck I went to an IDIDIT column to solve the problem but I'm sure there are many other solutions that you can use instead. Hopefully some of our fellow Bolters will have a few. They require just a little modification to work and look like they belong there. They are also more plentiful than 60-66 auto columns,

Welcome the the stovebolt from Overland Park, KS. There are factory automatic steering columns and linkage assemblies available on eBay. I have bought a couple there for a few of my '64-'66 Chevy trucks. Post your topic in the Swap Meet Section under Truck Parts Wanted and you will get some replies. As a new poster, you want to observe the posting rules or you go directly to jail without passing GO.

I also installed the column shift linkage into my Binder, after i got tired of the crappy floor shifter..

I was talking about a factory automatic steering column for the '64-'66 Chevy truck, not aftermarket or other vintage columns that might work. Swap meets are good for the truckers, but if it had keys, it was a ignition mounted column, which is not factory to the '64-'66 Chevy C10/C20/C30/K10/K20 series trucks. This series of truck had the ignition in the dash cluster bezel.
