I have a 49 chevy pu and am having a hard time getting the window and regulators out. They both need replacing. Does the window need to come apart from the regulator first.

The window is attached to the regulator by a channel on the bottom of the window. The arms on the regulator have two round "wheels" of a sort on the end and these roll in the channel.
If I recall correctly once the bolts holding the regulator in place are removed you should be able to slide these "wheels" out of the channel and lift the glass up and out. I believe you should also take the inside window frames off too.
Its been a while since I removed mine but it was quite a simple job compared to the window removal with a vent glass.
I read the shop manual before doing it and it explained it all. If you don't have a shop manual you should get one.

I have removed the inside frame and will try this.
Which shop manual do you have. The one I bought is the Chev assembly manual and it is hard to follow.

I have one for my TBIRD that was great so will get one for the 49. Just let me know and again thanks

Dan, there are four bolts that hold the glass frame to the C-shaped channel olblu49 speaks of. Once you remove the cardboard panel from the door, you can see them through the two openings toward the top of the door, once you roll the window up or down to have the channel meet that level.

Here are the directions as presented in the "servicing Chevrolet Truck Cabs (1947..1948). I'm pretty sure nothing changed for 1949.

"First, remove the control handles and door trim.

Then, raise the door glass and remove the four clutch-head screws which secure the glass frame to the regulator mechanism.

Roll the mechanism down all the way. Then rotate the glass in its opening, as shown, and lift it from the door."

Of course, you can't see the picture, but it shows the latch end of the glass being low in the door, and the leading edge being lifted up.

There's nothing in the booklet about removing the regulator.

I finally got them out today. Had to take the whole assembly out as the clutch head screws were rounded out. (of course) Will try to get them out now. THe fun part will be putting it all back
I found what looks like a good repair manual on line and will purchase that

Dan the service manual I spoke of is the regular 48-53 (I think its those years) Chevrolet Truck Shop Manual. Available at all suppliers. In fact I think there is a link on this site to the various pages which a member so kindly set up.

Dan, I'm missing those clutch head screws to attach the windows to the channels. Can you give me an idea of what size they are? It's getting near the time for me to to put the doors back together.
