If you dont know YET, I am desperate for a title. This guy claims he can do it. Will cost me $350 to do it. I am tempted, but frightened at the same time. What do you guys think??????

You guys on the left coast got a real problem with titles. I've heard real horror stories from guys who built cars from the rubber up not being able to title them. Get your brother-in-law in Georgia to title it there and transfer it to you. Look up "Street Rodder" mag. past articles, they have covered this issue.

i think i would be careful, most things as old as that can be titled through the state with a bill of sale, thats how it is here in kansas, but it might not be for you

What problem are you having? I've gone through the local DMV with 2 trucks w/o Titles and I haven't had too much trouble. You do have to jump hrough some hoops with the right forms filled out the right way, but once I got past that it was clear sailing.

Where are you at in CA? Maybe location makes a difference.

you should just be able to bring the truck to the DMV and apply for a new title. They will want to see the truck to verify the VIN, and that should be that.

Whatever this guy claims to be doing for $350 you should be able to do at your DMV for a fraction of the cost. We all get excited but patience will really save you time and money in the end.

I agree. So long as you have a bill of sale, you should be okay. You will probably have to have the vin (serial) number inspected, though.

All of my uncles and cousins in Cali have old cars and they didn't have too much trouble titling them, IIRC.

Cali is easier than some states. But there are other title services also. International title is one less expensive.

Check with the local CHP office, they have the forms to verify the vin, you can take the truck to them or sometimes they will come to you if you talk to them. The officer will check the vin# and sign the form for the DMV.

Also in CA. Do it yourself. It took me a bit, but I have a new VIN and new '57 Title for my 3200. Jan 2006, wife & son deposit truck on my driveway. No vin, no paper, no nothin. Found chassis ID. Talked to DMV & CHP. DMV had me fill out some forms & gave me 3-part form for CHP. CHP had me put in a non-working engine & tranny (Chevy big block & TH400). Has to look like it will run some day. After trailer trip to CHP office, gave me the VIN tag & completed forms. Another trip to DMV w/ CHP forms, weigh slip, and $10 & '57 title comes in the mail. Wrote thank you/appreciation note to DMV for being so helpful.

Many years ago I bought an old dune buggy that was dead in someone's garage. He had taken it in trade for some work and never did anything to it. So, I bought it without a title. Somehow I figured out that the way to get it titled was to take it to the CHP. By appointment, they had a guy in a mechanic's jump suit get the vin off the car (I didn't even know where it was). I guess he checked to make sure it hadn't been reported as stolen. I sat there for about an hour while he checked it out. While I was sitting there I was thinking what if this thing had been stolen? So, I started trying to think who would bail me out of jail for grand theft auto. Finally, he came out and looking kind of mysterious, slowly told me that he couldn't find the vin in the system so we used that number to once again to register the vehicle. Whew! What a relief! I was covered in sweat and he must have heard my heart beating. Fixed that old thing up, drove it around for awhile and had fun with it, sold it and trippled my money! I was 19 years old. And I'm happy to say that while I've never made money on another vehicle, I have managed to stay out of jail.

That guy isn't going to do anything for you for the $350 that you can't do for your self.
The problem with CA is that they have an incredibly large and complicated vehicle code. No one, and I mean no one knows what it says. In CA you shop for the DMV that will do what you want. If you go to ten DMV's, you can get ten different answers. If you talk to five different people in one DMV, you will get five different answers. If you go to AAA, they will give you an even different answer.
Two important things to remember when dealing with the DMV. SHUT UP. Don't forget to SHUT UP. If you open your mouth, they pull out another form. Open your mouth again and they pull out yet another form. They can do that all day long. They have more forms than any organization in the world.
The second thing to remember is that at any time while you are there, you can leave. You walk out the door, chuck all the new forms they gave you and start fresh at another DMV. This time, SHUT UP.

i just went thru this here in CA. Just tell them you lost all the paper work in a move. They will do a vin # search and if it is not on the records then you fill out a few forms and pay a fee and they mail you the title. Bring the truck to tripple A or get a cop friend to verify the vin. The yahoos at DMV will screw it up or want to send you to CHP.

Been a while since I did it, but these folks are right. I brought a bike from New Zealand & registered it in CA without any issues, there's a couple similar hoops to jump through.

You will be required to get the VIN verified & usualy any CHP officer at the local depot can do it. They run the numbers to make sure it's not stolen or duplicated in the system. I'd call the DMV to see if the form the CHP will need is provided by the DMV or the CHP to save some time.
Dont ever goto a large DMV, find one in an outlying town and get there early. The people that work these small places seem to be less likely to suffer from burnout and can be of some actual use to you, making the extra few miles worth the cost.

She hadn't been papered since '76, and that was as a farm vehicle. She's been sold a couple times since then as well & all I had was the origianl title with a signature on it. Took me all of 30 minutes to get plates & be on my way.

Well guys, no worries. I got fed up with the whole ordeal and decided to use the papers he gave me. Beings there was a paper trail..I didnt have the FEAR of it being stolen. I yanked off the VIN and took in the paper work. Got it transferred, got the fees/penalties paid up and all they need to do now is a VIN check. I found new blank VINS and bought the one that matches the trucks original. Just going to stamp it with the paperworks #'s and say Phooey on it! Good advise for others out there going threw the same frustration as I! Thanks guys...BIG help! The Beers' on me!

In Arkansas, any member of law enforcement can make a visit to verify the VIN. After that, we apply for a "Lost Title" at the state Title Office. Almost painless and inexpensive. Good luck.

California will NOT accept most of the title services' paperwork, such as Broadway and International. In fact, if you go to those title company websites, they list the states that do NOT accept their paperwork. Too many streetrodders were getting original docs for all-'glass cars, and the states were not liking that.
