Hello from Las Vegas.
I picked up this 64 C-20 fleet a couple months ago. I have wanted one for a long time as I had a 64 fleet in high school back in 1966. Just love the style.
I have been lurking around Stovebolt.com for quite a while . What a great site. Just reading the threads in several of the forums over the last few months has helped me decide what I want to do with my truck, and how to go about it correctly.

She has the original 283 with a Th-350 trans.
The engine seems to be in nice shape,140 lbs on all 8 cyclinders, and the tranny shifts real smooth.
The rear end has been changed but I don't know what it is yet, but seems to have nice highway gears.
Next week the steam cleaning of the engine compartment and the underside gets done, then the work starts. Small amount of mechanical to be done then I plan on taking the bed off as it is on crooked, and pull the engine and start my restoration under the hood and on the bed.
I will most likely be asking alot of questions the near future as I have not been involved in a restoration since High school back in the 60's
I really don't think I would have decided to jump into this project if it weren't for Stovebolt.com. I got so much help the 1st few times I posted re: My 64 C-30 Stake bed.

Solid looking truck! Is/was it originally a 3/4 ton? I noticed the 5 lugs on the rear wheels, kinda threw me when I saw the "20" side badges.
From what I could tell, looks like it's got an '88-'98 Chevy 1/2 ton 2wd rear. That's mainly judging from the cover.

Bruce, Bruce, Bruce . . 's a good truck. Do you even know how it works yet? What it wants? What you want doesn't really matter at this early stage. You need to work the auld girl, and let her tell you which end is up.
My personal practice is to run her for a year or two, put her through her paces, so to speak. Then the overhaul.

Yes, it is a 3/4 ton. I checked the vin with GM
She has 8 lug spindles on the front. I will need to make a change so as to only require 1 spare tire. I believe the P0 told me the rear end is out of a 95 1/2 ton but not sure. I need to call him. He had it put in at a local driveline shop.

Not going to overhaul the drivetrain at this time. I think it is pretty solid. I am only pulling the engine to clean and paint the compartment and engine. I am thinking very seriously about power steering and AC though.

There is a tank underneith, but I may not use it. It is outside the frame and looks awful dangerous to me. I may just use the cab tank for everyday and fill the auxiliary when I need it.

You got a solid old truck there. I had a 64 custom cab for my first one so I know what you mean, I love the lines of that series. You have a great start with something so straight.Good luck.

Welcome to the 'bolt. Aren't projects fun? I'd strongly advise getting the mechanical requirements done before starting any of the body work. If you don't you'll be scratching your paint while leaning into the engine compartment working on something there.
