i've been accused of being a little too obsessive compulsive, but this could be confirmation.

i bought a new passenger side tail light for my 50 (it didn't come with one originally and i've driven it that way for 12 years). new mounting bracket, new tail light housing, new lens...the works. put it on the old truck and it stood out like a sore thumb. the 50's natural patina just made the new part look like it didn't belong, so...

took everything back off the truck, sprayed some primer, some white paint, hit it with the sandblaster, ran some 36 grit over it, threw it in the dirt and rocks and kicked it around and ta da! instant vintage?!?

perfect or not, it at least looks like it belongs on the truck now.

I cant imagine buying new good chrome and dragging it though the dirt. Wow, anyway, at least they match!

yeah, when I originally started reading the post, I thought when he pulled out the primer, white paint and a sandblaster that MAAAAAAYBE it was for the truck! I got excited there for a second.

I dig it.. and it's not o.c.d. at all.

If you had a blue truck, and bought a new fender, you'd paint the new fender to 'match'.. and really, that's all you did.

Bought a new part, and painted it to match.

I think your truck looks great.. has that working truck 'farm fresh' look to it.

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.

A few years ago I saw an 49 - 53 Panel on the street. It had that same look. It was blue (mostly) and a white - gray prime showing through on the top of fenders, hood and roof. It was basically in very good shape and the 'patina' made it look like an old original truck that had been used but loved. It looked real cool!

didn't drag the chrome through the dirt/rocks, just the painted parts.

as far as repainting the truck...it's not going to happen. not for a long time anyway. the original paint is in decent shape and i like that it hasn't been painted. as long as i can maintain the truck in this condition, it's going to stay that way.

Hey, p.j., is that your mountain bike? I wish we had the terrain around here to need that kind of suspension.

yeah, it's one of them. it's primarily a downhill bike, but i climb with it too. of course the best part is turning around, going down and really putting the suspension to work.

i've done a few downhill races, one in nevada, two in durango and one in northern arizona. they're held mostly at ski resorts so you can imagine what some of the terrain is like.

PJ, I think it looks great, nice thinking. But you ain't getting near my new parts :p

I think your truck looks great the way it is. I'd keep the original paint as long as I could too.

looks real close to original, as beaver 53 said i'd scratch the chrome bezal up a little, she is still pretty shiney, or you could put an original bezal on i don't recall without looking but i think they are the same as driver's side,
P.s.
o.c.d would be if you had done that to a brand new chrome grill grin

i had to send the pictures to my mom (her dad was the original owner of the truck). she was pretty impressed at how good the 50 looks. just nice to be able to preserve a piece of family history.
