In the center of the art deco dashes on the verticle face under the 5 verticle grooves and above the ash tray there is a horizontal hole that is about 6 inches long by 3/8 inch wide. What is this hole for???

I'm not an expert on the 40-46 dashes, but could it be for a lever that controlled the heater?

Just a guess.

Lighting of the ignition switch and cable knobs. There should be a light bulb in a socket behind that slot. The light is controlled by the 3 position slide switch under the dash.

SHAZAAM SHAZAAM SHAZAAM!!! That was fast! I'll have to do some investigating to see if that socket is there!

Thank God for Barry Weeks. When I saw dash hole, I was pretty concerned people had made up a new curse for stovebolters.

I'll admit, I can be a dash hole at times. Are you sick of snow yet Bill? Looked like Oswego got covered up until spring.

Isnt that called a map light switch?

It's called a map light switch on a 77 Coupe Deville.

The light bulb is actually mounted in the bracket that reinforces the choke & throttle cable attachment. The switch and light are mentioned in the owner's manual

Yeah, My book showed the switch, but it didn't show the lamp. My Truck is missing the switch, and the lamp isn't in the socket. I'll have to find one of those 77 cadilac map light switches. Maybe I"ll put a neon tube up there, and where the stainless trim goes... NOT!

I just pulled the slide switch out of my 46 daddy if you want it for yours. Just pm me your info and I will drop it in the mail to you.

I'm sick of snow and the cold. I'll bet you know the cold better than me though. Yesterday it was -30 when I got up for work. Today it was 34. This has been a winter to remember here in Upstate New York.

All you East coasters prolly think us Left coasters are nutz, But I sure wish we had snow here. It's been a pretty dry year so far in Sunny California. I just hope they don't start mentioning the "D" word.

High here in Hurst, just east of Fort Worth, today in the lower 70's. Got a Swap Meet this week-end just north west of Fort Worth at Decatur, Texas. Friday's high should be 69 and Saturday in the 70's. Chance of rain. This is the best it has been for the whole month of February.

right here in kansas we have the best of both worlds, ice, cold, snow, and negitive temps. - then heat- to much heat, and triple digit heat, and yes the "D" from time to time, its nice in the spring exept the tornados, but fall is nice also today was in the 50's and 4 days ago it was around 2 or 3 and snow

A tip for when you install your new dash light. Be careful of the space between the bulb and the back side of the dash. You will see that the bulb socket clips into a bracket held in place by the choke and throttle cable mounts. If this is not assembled correctly there will not be enough space between the bracket and the back of the dash. I had my choke and throttle cables all installed at both the carb. end and the dash before I tried to insert the new light bulb and socket into the bracket, and had to take it all apart to slip in a couple of spacer washers. Not sure if they should have been there in the first place or if the replacement bulb is a different size. All somewhat frustrating while laying on your back with your head wedged under the dash. All the worse as I could have done it all when the dash was laying on the bench.
