The trick is to spin it over once with the choke on and ignition off, to prime the carb. When you crank it, you do it clockwise, and you need to always do it on a pull stroke so the crank doesn't rip off your arm or face if the engine backfires. You want to get the crank into the 7:00 position, turn on the ignition, then stand next to it on the passenger side, facing the windshield. Give it a solid pull upward, and let go once you reach 11:00. The engine will spit the crank outward if it starts, if not you want to shut off the ignition and reposition the crank for then next try. It can be dangerous, so don't hurt yourself.
