For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 26 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 26 | Man Oh man what a great site. I recently decided to move and I have decided to trade my 1962 ford galaxie for a 1964 two ton flatbed instead of spending 1500.00 renting a u-haul. From what I have seen on this site and all of your links that pretty much made my mind up for me.And I have learned it probably is an old dump truck conversion. The vin is C65352720258 if anyone has any knowledge I would welcome it greatly. The only issue is It would cost 1250.00 to register it here but my brain says get a trip permit and register it in oregon for 150.00 what do you guys think? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2004 Posts: 168 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2004 Posts: 168 | Welcome to the 'Bolt!!!
I'm not sure of the legality of your request, but it sure sounds like a swell idea. If you trust your judgment enough to say "Go for it!" then you'll have a new truck and some memories to go along with your move, rather than several hours in a U-Wreck It. Good luck!
Someone will be along shortly to give you links to many different VIN decoder sites. I can't think of any right now, but you should get several. Any information on the engine, trans and other particulars? Oh yeah, everyone ALWAYS wants photos...

My wife was laughing at me because I was looking for the 1 to pop up in the reply column. Ha-Ha. I actually think I am way more excited to re-build the truck than move back home. Hey any help is welcomed. Thanks again. J.E.D. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 2,423 Former Workshop Owner | | Former Workshop Owner Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 2,423 | Hey joejam,
Welcome to the "Bolt", where is Visalia anyway? I thought license plates were expensive in Nebraska, wow 1500.00!! I think if you go to Tech Tips on the Stovebolt home page, you should find the information to decode your VIN.
Good Luck
John

What about a historical registration? Those are usually much less expensive. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,445 Moderator - The Electrical Bay | | Moderator - The Electrical Bay Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 3,445 | Welcome to the 'bolt.. wise choice to invest in a big truck to haul your stuff.. where in oregon are you moving to?

Lucas ,Visalia is 35 minutes south of fresno on Hghwy 99, I agree I told my wife I would not drag the family anywhere else. (at least for the next 2 years) Ha-Ha Thanks for the tech tips. Man rusty I thought it was wise when I saw ol' 2 ton. Of corse she started right up and now I'm hooked on her . I'm moving back to portland, Troutdale area. You can't beat the rivers and I figure I can put ol' 2 ton to work moving stuff for the family. The closest thing I can find out is she might be a 1960's factory four on the floor with overdrive because the button rides right along the shift knob? Hmm? . I can't wait to pick her up.Brendan It is alot of money whats this about a historical reg? That sounds easy. Does california accept those? If you do, fill out a statemant of facts, stating that the truck was parked and not moved for what ever amount of time. write that the previous owner told you that there where no back fees, and that why you bought the truck. as long as there where no tickets, either parking, moving etc. It's worked for me a few times Perro (Randy)

How many cylinders does the engine have? You'll want to put a few miles on the old girl to familiarize yourself with her peccadilloes - she'll have some - and to be sure she's up to par for a long drive. Unless she has been extensively updated, she'll be slower than you think. That ain't a bad thing, you just have to get used to it. Pay particular attention to tire pressures and load security. And everything else, come to think of it.
It has been some time since I was down that far, but take a look at a map and consider Hwy.#US97 north of Weed, CA, then #OR58 into Eugene, OR. It's flatter, therefore easier on the old stuff, and quicker and less crazy than I-5. And there's a nice hot spring near Oakridge, OR so you could take a dip to ease the sore muscles you WILL have. 1951 3800 Be the change you want to see. -hotshoe

I will look into it. My main man Hot shoe that is funny (Ha-Ha-Ha) I agree I think she will make it as well. I have traveled both the santiam and MT. hood route in other vehicles. My mothers story of us going off of the santiam and my sister crawling over my mom and I before we fell over the cliff to the river made my wife want to travel the flatest way possible. Which would be vear of weed and take it through Bend oregon. Then I could pay my respects to my Grandfather and Grandmothers grave on the trip as well. **** I always have made it over the passes of mount Hood in everything I have drivin,But the girl loaded makes me shifart...Ha Ha. hey Micron When I moved here to cali I actually took those I-5 mountan ranges and there were actually people pushing the exact car and mini van I was hauling up the pass. That is not what I want to go down the pass. And the fish caught at the rest stop with the beuty alone was amazing when we crossed over to klamouth.Thank you partner.Micron if you saw what I saw (my sisters *** saying goodbye) You would say I -5 is only if you have family in the line to visit, Thanks though. My pics will be up later guys sorry. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | Check the brakes over real well. If you come I-5 you'll want to be sure you can go slow enough coming down that pass!
I haven't driven any of the eastern routes in the last 20 years so I can't comment on them. I have driven 101 several times in the last few years and would NOT choose that route in an old truck.
Back in the 80's I made a couple of moves in a '51 GMC. I bought it one week and drove it 300 miles the next. The brakes were fine, but the pressure line to the oil filter broke and emptied my crankcase. It was dark and I had no dash lights (dumb!) so I didn't know until it started knocking.
I made it the last few miles, but it was noisy. Six months later I replaced one rod bearing and then used it again to move 100 miles.
I sold that truck to pay for an engagement ring. I still have the girl and don't regret her, but I do regret selling that truck.

As long as you have the title and a trip permit the DMV here doesn't care about if it wasn't currently registered in another state, they will just do a VIN inspection and issue you plates.
When I bought my '50 it had long-expired Nebraska plates and an old title that wasn't in the old owner's name. They didn't care, the title was signed. I just drove it over to the office after I got it running and they gave me a new Oregon title without any hassle.
Just make sure you have insurance, they will really ding you for that if you get caught without it.

292's are good solid motors so you should make it just fine.
