I am considering improving the highway revs on my 49 3/4. It currently has a 216 (Crazy Canadian Truck), a grany low 4 speed and a 4.57 rear. I want to change to a 4.10 rear (if I can find one) but I am also interested in the T5 5speed OD tranny. Will it bolt to the 216? which one would be the best all-round driver?

I'll have to change the drive shaft anyway, so would it be better to just change the short forward one to fully open and get a new bearing or could I get away with a longer large diameter one-piece drive shaft? Would I still have shaft balance and whipping problems with say a 3" or 3 1/2" shaft?

Thanks

Current fleet (subject to change w/o notice)
\'49 GMC 3/4-Ton , 60 Austin Healey Frog-eye Sprite (some assembly required), 2011 Dodge Avenger, 2015 Jeep Cherokee. No, they don't all run.
My other ride is a (B737)no, (B767)no, A320.... Update... was Embraer E190, now Boeing B787.

Knowledge is a wonderful thing, but ignorance means you don't know you can't do something.

I would not want to run a T5 in a 3/4 ton truck if you use it for any kind of hauling. Look for an NV4500 instead. It will require modifying the bellhousing for the 5.125" pilot diameter. Then go with a fully open driveline.

I put a T-5 from an 84 S-10 into my 57 3/4 ton truck with a 235 ci engine and it works great. I too had the 4:57 and I changed it out to a 4:10 from a 72 4x4 that I picked up at a local salvage yard and with 235x85x16 tires I can cruise at 65 mph @ 2500 rpms. Has really chaged the character of my truck for the better and I would highly reccomend this conversion.

57 Mike, are you towing anything with your truck set up like that?

Kenny - you run across any NV4500's you are not interested in yourself . . . drop me an e-mail, I am still on the hunt for one with a chevy bellhousing to go behind a 292.
