I have a suggestion for a New Year's resolution for all "Bolters" out there, Sign up for the Stovebolt Locator in 2007!
I've noticed there have been several posting and responses from 'Bolters in Wisconsin (that's where I'm from), and I'm wondering how many more are in the area (maybe some in my own "backyard"). I'm sure that there are others in other states may wonder the same. | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | An excellent suggestion, Randy! An because I had some trouble finding it at first, here's a link to it | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 709 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: May 2001 Posts: 709 | Don't know if it would beagreeable with everyone but maybe signing up for the locator could be initiated into the registration process. Just a thought.

Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas. Even if it isn't awefully PC.

The reason we never advertised the World page much is because it is a manual process. From it's original onset, obviously, it has grown and then had to be re-designed a little. Paul was waiting for us to get to it. And waiting. And waiting. So, he did it himself (which I think it works well).
Rather than pile more work on Paul, we've left it as a "when we get a chance to do it" kind of project.
You know, if the forums, you can also search for folks by location. Unfortunately, no everyone puts a valid location.
It would be cool to have a real map, with real email addresses, real locations ... all done with some computer magic codes.
But, it won't be coming from this end of the office.
Open to suggestions.

Seems that between these two existing options finding locations shouldn't be too difficult.

If I remember correctly there was a nice bolt at a service shop downtown near the firestation. That yours? Got a relative near the foundary.

We need a little more of a catchy title to make sure people take a look at this. Something like, “Enter Your Name into the Stovebolt Locator” or something like that. And maybe post it in all the forums for a while. Great idea and very, very well done. I added my name to IL and found two guys that are within ten miles of the house. I emailed them, so we'll see if they are friend or foe! Have a nice holiday all. Denny Graham Sandwich, IL

I may be able to come up with something that'll run on your linux box that's a little more automatic. At least, there'd be very little intervention on anyone's part (just an approval process...). Does your box have PHP and MySQL? Should I be asking Paul? | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | A while back I wrote a program that parses the existing page and puts most the data in a db table. Paul was working on a MySQL database to support the operation.
Last we talked Paul decided the project needed to wait until the new server was in place.
I don't know what he has done since, and until seeing this hadn't thought about it in a long while.

I found the source of the sudden avalanche of submissions.....y'all are wearing me out..... To answer some questions - the new server is running php5. Mysql isn't installed, but that's a ten minute job. I have a basic db design somewhere...kind of got put on the back burner when things got crazy at work....I know some basic php (including db stuff) and know my way around mysql fairly well, so eventually I would get around to it. If someone wants to help, that would obviously speed the process up. Old Sub and I met about it, but then his job duties changed and mine increased and well, this is an all volunteer operation, so.... I thought it would be cool to tie the Locater page into Google Maps maybe....set up some "canned" queries so you could search by state or city or metropolitan area...like, show me all the bolters in the tri-state area, all the bolters in the greater New York City area, etc. (Obviously would take some work to get all that set up properly, but the tables and attributes are in the design to do that. I'll root around and see if I can find the db design document.... | | | | Joined: Mar 2000 Posts: 1,229 Red dot, center of chest ... | Red dot, center of chest ... I've probably got less php experience than you do (I'm an ASP and ColdFusion boy, and even that is out of date), but I'm more than familiar with MySql. If you don't mind, I'd like to take a crack at this. If nothing else, it'll be good practice for me! | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,470 Bond Villain | Bond Villain Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,470 | Wow, this would be so cool if this could happen. And take some of the load off Paul. Peggy's probably got some other tedious work for him

My general SQL skills are more current but my last change in responsibilities means I no longer code anything and my last birthday means I'm old enough to forget everything.
I'd love to be part of solving this, but if it depends on me for more than comments and suggestions it will likely take forever!

Once the db is setup and ready to go, the coding part will be relatively easy to do, and we can hash that out here as well. | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 144 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 144 | Hey Paul, I'm wondering if you'd like some help? PHP and mysql is my thing right now. I'm doing a webapp for work right now. I was also wondering if we can move this topic into the IT section so I can find it again. It's not intuitively a general truck topic. Oh, I should also add that we could make use of this API, if you felt adventurous: http://www.google.com/apis/maps/ Zeke | | |
