Just wanted to introduce myself. I hope that this forum can provide information for the potential project I'll have.
I've had a 1949 3100 in my posession for about 15 years now. I bought it from my grandfather for 50 bucks, with the intention of fixing it up and driving it in high school. Unfortuneatly reality struck and I found that that just wasn't going to happen. Fast forward to now. I'm out of school, married, got a house (with a huge garage..LOL). That truck has been on my mind for many years...sell it or don't..back and forth. As I now live in Tennessee, about 18 hours from my parent's house back in Nebraska, I didn't think I would ever have the chance to try and fulfill my dreams. Well, last week I was talking with a dear friend of mine who offered to haul it down to me. So, come this summer, I may have my dream become a reality and be able to do this truck up right.
I am very glad that I found this board, and I have tons and tons of questions. But, I figured this was long enough for a first post, and I have yet to fully utilize the search. But I do plan on asking for info and opinions. Literally, I'm like chomping at the bit..LOL.
This is a great site, and from what I've read so far, a great online community. Kudos to all who help each other out. I look forward to posting more very soon!

I've found a wealth of information here. People are quick to answer questions, patient with the "dumb" questions, and just generally nifty and swell. Thye always ask for photos, so I'll let you know that, even though I haven't submitted any yet either.

I have always wanted to turn it into a 'rod. Not that I don't like restorations...it's just not what I ever wanted to do with the truck.
I have the complete truck, including extra fenders front and rear that my grandfather had in the barn. I wanted to put a v-8 in it, so my dad had talked some guys and was informed that a clip with the steering box way up front would reduce the angle of the steering column? (Mind you..at this time the last thing I was thinking about was this truck...college..exams..girls..) So he got ahold of a 76 Pontiac Ventura. Same as a Nova. It's got a 305/4 spd. The plan was to take the front clip and merge it with the stock frame. I would also utilize the rear end under the truck.
Now I see where an s-10 swap seems to be the trend. I have little to no experience fabbing stuff, welding or anything that will help on this project! LOL. But, I want to learn and be as good as my father and grandfather. I guess I'm anxious to see if this pontiac swap will work, or if I should shell the idea and start searching for an s-10 frame? Guess it's all in what I want to do.

I also have a '49. I used the Mustang II IFS. Kind of did away with the steering problems. Be waiting to hear progress reports.

I looked around to see if I had any pics of the truck from the last time I was home, but I don't have anything digital. I'm still anxious to hear opinions on my use of the pontiac. But, it will be awhile til I get the thing down here, so that can wait. For right now I'm researching welders. Even called the local community college to see what they have to offer. I can stick weld in a pinch, but I've never touched a mig. I'll have to learn to rebuild a small block too. But, my wife is 100% behind me, and wants to stitch the interior.

Same thing, really, and interchangeable for this application. I personally would go with the 305 and fuel injection if I was to go that way - more power, better fuel economy - but mine is a 1-ton, and in good original condition, so I'll either be restoring it to near original specs or I'm thinking diesel power.
