I just installed a 4 speed trans into my 1953 chevy 3100 and I must say it is a pleasuer to drive. I have been dealing with a junk 3 speed three on the tree that kept jumping out of thhird gear. My only problem is now is there isa noise coming from the frame somewhere, I hear it when I hold the clutch in for a long period of time.can't tell where it's coming fromhowever I love the feel of the shifter.

Hey lock -- Is it an SM420? And where in Maryland are you?

That noise could be a number of things -- did you have to alter the driveshaft? Could it be out of balance? Is your carrier bearing secure? U-Joints, etc?

And did you secure the nut on the output yoke?

If you're hearing it when you hold the clutch, it's probably the throw out bearing. Did you install a new one when you put in the 4 speed? An old timer told me best thing to do with a new throw out bearing is to boil it in STP on top the stove. I've tried it and have never had trouble with them.

You really shouldn't have your clutch down for long periods. Just put it in neutral to prolong TO bearing life.

I boy I blew it, The sound I heard was the muffler hitting aganst the frame, I moved it over by loosening the clamp and now everything is quiet, I did not put a new throw out bearing in when we changed over to 4 speed however evrything was new anyway from all the trouble with the three speed, with the kit from patrick's you dod not have to alter the drive shaft.
