old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 9 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 9 | I want to re-mount the spare on my 50 3600 to the original location under the bed. The curved top portion that's bolted to the cross members is still there. I've only found references/retailers for a 3100 mount. Since I've not seen one mounted, I just don't know if they would interchange. Yes, I could do the side mount but I like the way the truck looks without it and want it to be original. i've got a 50 3/4 ton as well. not unlike yours, the only thing left is the top "runner" for the under bed spare. i'm leaving mine side mounted (it's the only way it's been for as long as i can remember) but it's my understanding that the lower hardware is similar to the 1/2 ton set-up, just a little larger to accommodate the bigger tires on the 3600's. i could be wrong (it's been known to happen) but if i am, i'm sure someone else will chime in an correct me. do you have 16" 's or 17" tires?
where in mesa are you located? i'm in tempe so we can't be too far apart... | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Right up my alley guys, I've got the same problem with my '50, 3604. They took the under bed spare hardware off and jerry rigged a mount on the box behind the drivers door. I would like to fab the new hardware if I could get some pictures of the original factory mounts, seems they were all thrown on the scrap heap or cut up for the side mount. I would also like to see some pictures of the inside/outside of the factory RPO side mount, seems like almost all of them were homemade, been looking for a couple of months butt still haven't seen the factory version. There are several pictures, maybe that would help? The price seemed kinda high, but I guess I've never really priced them before. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | Get a spare tire winch from a newer truck and hoist that spare up and into place, Scott | | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 76 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2004 Posts: 76 | I used the spare tire winch and crossmember from a Nissan pickup. Works like a charm and beats having to lay down on the road to get to the spare. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 9 Junior Member | | Junior Member Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 9 | Thank you all for the info. P.J.---I have 7.00x15 split rims on my 3600. Because of that I hope someone can send me a pic of a mount on a 3100 on up. BTW, I live just NE of Higley and Southern. I think one morning next week I'll pay a visit to the pull-a-part to see if any of the trucks still have their mount. I just hope I don't spend as much time as last week looking for a jack!! | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 | Fellas, Here are some photos of the spare tire carrier from my '52 3600. http://rides.webshots.com/album/555514557fgENpA As you can see, it's a little "tweaked" and needs to be straightened a bit. I don't know if '50 would be the same...should be similar. I'll look it up in the parts book if I get a chance. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 587 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2000 Posts: 587 | Ghostrider, The 52 spare carrier is different from what those guys are talking about. Those spare carriers are about as rare as hens teeth. Odd, since they were a stock item. My theory is they all disappeared because they were such a pain the the arse. Once you take the spare down, putting it back was a major chore, so most just threw the spare in the bed and the hanging down hardware in the dump. So now if you find any, they will be very expensive. I have the carrier for my 49 1/2 ton, but have never seen the carrier for a 3/4 ton. But they are different, since there is a drawing of both in my Master Parts Catalog. If any of you guys want a copy of that page, pm me your email address or fax number. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 | Brian, So what you're saying is that the '50 carrier is different than the '52? My frame doesn't have the curved type top piece on it that dgrief mentioned on his '50 3600. There are two small u-channels on each side of the rear crossmember that the tire presses up against. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2413602360097645965VCIQWh You can only see the rear u-channel in this photo, but you get the idea. I can see how the original carrier is a pain judging from the shape mine is in with 35,000 original miles on it. The long bolt on the non-pivot end has been cut off at the bottom and another threaded section brazed onto it. My parts book is a little vague on this subject. I'm w/ 48bigtrucks on this one.....
i bought a modern cable crank down unit,(from a 90's chevy) about $20.00. welded two support bolts. extended the crank down socket rod back further to the rear and stopped @ the bed's edge. fashioned up a crank handle. Tire's are heavy and this system is much easier to deal with when changing a tire than the stock method of lying on your back in the dirt/mud/cold/rain/snow to fetch the tire. >>> It WORKS great.
